Yes the mask breaking WAS the protection, essentially signifying that urokodaki’s spell worked in protecting tanjiro from harm. Not a lot of reactors catch that and usually just get sad the mask broke and didn’t do anything, but it did. It works similar to the way jade cuffs work. The myth behind jade jewelry is that it’s meant as a symbol of protection, but frequently protect women from broken wrists by catching their falls. The jade cuffs shatters and the wearer’s wrists remain unbroken.
