They had just sent their Armada against the Spanish to upset their domination as the Premier Superpower and it got destroyed. Im pretty sure John was like 1 out of 150 or 200 capable navigators left in the entire English kingdom, so that cannon thing to me was a bit main character syndromy but the chain shot (cannonball tied to another cannonball with a chain) scene was so cool it was worth it.
