You'll find it in the US (at least in sports) as well to a lesser extent. I remember calling a good number of my teammates by their last name in both high school and college bowling.

2024-11-03 22:55:41 +0000 UTCYep Kageyama is his last name. Tobio is his first name. Hinata is the last name and Shoyo is the first name. They call each other by last names in Japan. If you're on a closer level you do get to call them by their first name, if you're older than them or it depends if they prefer to be called by their first name. There are those who ask if its ok to call you on a first name basis too. Calling them by last name is just more on the respect kind of level and the first name is more on the informal level.
