So I wanted to talk a little bit about one of my own side-projects(and by the chaos gods I have many) Namely this space wolf terminator that is nothing special just a regular bloke. You can give a non-character alot of character ;) I like to keep it simple sometimes(not the painting thought).
When painting I really like to create new textures and materials that doesn't exist on the model originally. And for this SW terminator I've gone into a very deep micro detail. Creating Textures in layers with fades of glazes to melt them into each other. The idea is to reflect The outer layer of beaten/worn ceramite on the plating. The rust is mostly dirt and not corrosion since ceramic materials don't react the same way as metals. therefore it mostly collects in recessed areas and in deeper dents in the plating. You can thought imagine the bottom layer of adamantium to seep out through cracks in form of rust(It's up to the imagination of the viewer)
Anyway when painting really small like this the details adds up and gives the mini a whole new smooth but finely detailed look.
If you guys are interested I can make a demo on a shoulder pad on how to achieve this.
Happy Painting all!
