The Greenlight Game - Part 2

Updates from possibly the most tiring week of my life. Far too much talking to people wearing ties. Phone calls that literally lasted whole days. Said the word "Accounts" too many times. Was sick a lot. Very tiring.

Anyway. Let's check in with both games because for some reason I kept working on both.

First up, Systems Nominal Edition Steam (or SNES for short) is feature locked. That's my side of it done really.  We've got difficulty modes, new keyboard layouts, different ships, different endless modes, secrets, new art and the option to have letters on the keyboards.  It's about 95% bigger than it was but still fits the idea of a small quick game. I guess.

Second. Motel Room Six (title wip) is coming along nicely. I think I've nailed the idea down to a much stronger framework. The game is set over 6 days. Each day you play as the different occupant of a Motel room. In each room there are 6 items. The order you select them in defines who your character is and what you choose to do with them defines what your character does. Then, in a way I'm not going to spoil, we pull parts of that together to make a climax.

I love the idea of hotel rooms. Normally when you're in one you don't know what's outside. You're somewhere new, you're away from home. They become your island, your security, your own personal eye of the storm.

Motels are even better for this. They can be literally the only thing for miles. The only light in the darkness. Makes for a nice place to set a game and Rebecca's (according to her "very hastily done and unfinished") artwork above shows off the feel I want the game to have. The last light in the darkness.

Of course, during the story, it's fun to turn the light off.

More next week!

PS. Apparently we can't call it SNES. Something to do with trademarks.

looks good

So good

I feel like 'Hotel Room Six' could be a resemblance to Telltales' "The Walking Dead: 400 days", if that makes sense. Otherwise, it works really well

Hype

That motel has a creepy vibe to it, I like it. I hope there's no jump scares! Also just saw the twitter posts, wanted to say that I'm one of the happy few! Keep doing what you're doing.

All this stress, buying a new house, completing your next series (100 best games), getting married and you decide to keep both game projects open... Wow...

Daku

This concept reminds me heavily of Bill Baileys's bonus video in the Part Troll DVD where he rushes into various hotel rooms during his tour for the things that make him feel comfortable (tea and coffee making facilities)

36 adventures.

Zach Braid

6 rooms 6 items 6 adventures 🤔

:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yes c:

I enjoyed the analogys about Motels/Hotels

What engine are you making it in?

Looks great, I'd like to see what 'SNES' looks like as well :p Is the motel game going to be on steam too?

Everyone's think about a horror game when you said "it's fun to turn the light off", and I'm just thinking about turning on a blacklight and seeing all the stains on the bed. Mosaiccchh of zzzssemen.

That motel game immediately made me think of the great John Cusack film Identity. I'm seriously looking forward to that game. PS: Good luck with the house purchase, most stressful thing I ever did.

"Of course, during the story, it's fun to turn the light off." Bringing ALL the flashlights. Gaspowered generator with worklights. The works. There will be no darkness.

Bjorn van Rijszen

"It's fun to turn the light off." Dan, I swear to God, if you make a horror game I will cry... but I'll probably end up playing it anyways! Looking forward to what the future brings.

Loz

I must say that I am definitely looking forward to you present us in the future

Interesting artwork. I can imagine a 2D rendered Guybrush Threepwood in the foreground and it being a modern, gritty, somewhat Noir-esque Monkey Island. Anyway, whatever the game ends up being. It sounds interesting. Nice idea on the restriction of the whole "choose your own adventure" with 6 days and 6 items. Is there some cool story based stuff that connects the characters? Like...character 2 is running away from someone, and character 5 is that person and one of the items is a pair of binoculars by the window in character 5's room? Anyway...looking forward to it!
