Hi Dan, this may get buried given how old this episode is now but I just wanted to say a huge thank you. I've only joined your patreon recently and started making my way through the podcast backlog but something about your rambling tangents and daft humour has really scratched an itch in my adhd brain, not to mention making my continued isolation feel that little bit less lonely. All this to say I shall definitely be bumping up my pledge, it's the least I can do when you've unknowingly brightened my days :)

2018-01-13 21:10:46 +0000 UTCPlayer of games is the best book of all time although wasp factory is like a close second
2018-01-13 20:29:15 +0000 UTCIf you like lovely liberal future you really should read the Ian M. Banks culture novels. They are eerily similar to the far future federation you describe. Player of games is a really great thinky novel about interacting with a space empire that's a nice short intro to the universe, Consider Philebas is sort of the Abraham's equivalent with lots of big cool set pieces exploding that's a slightly easier read and finally Surface Detail is a great longer novel that experiments with the idea of enforced VR afterlifes (Like San Junipero from black mirror but a little more grimy) .
2018-01-13 14:34:14 +0000 UTCNew supporter here. Always wanted to get an answer to this (Cue you skipping this one!). Do you have a favorite lego piece?

2018-01-13 00:19:32 +0000 UTCHave you had a chance to check out Voez on Switch? I recommended it during a livestream, but basically it's like Elite Beat Agents for the Nintendo Switch, and just plays so smoothly! I'm currently about a...third through the game (there are 160 songs, on 3 different difficulty settings), and simply can't recommend it enough!

2018-01-12 22:56:25 +0000 UTCThat smile from jodie was so perfect and childish and I loved it. I think Chibnall is using a writers room so it should be better i hope. 2018-01-12 22:05:32 +0000 UTCFinally caught up with these podcasts, I've started to take you to bed with me to help unwind! I'm so glad people like you, Ashens, Big Clive, Tom Scott etc can exist to balance certain moronic others. P.S Loved the EDF stream yesterday, I've always played as Fencer but this ludicrous use of a helicopter and turrets might change me <a href="https://youtu.be/XLgk_FPg74Y" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/XLgk_FPg74Y</a>

2018-01-10 13:50:02 +0000 UTCPeople like game of thrones for the plot, characters and world. The twist and turns only enhances the lack of plot armour that's all. It's not a good example of bad grimdark for the sake of it.

2018-01-10 04:58:17 +0000 UTCI was not gonna bother watching Star Trek Discovery, but after hearing your description of it, i think i will, sounds pretty good :D.

2018-01-09 02:15:44 +0000 UTCI find it kinda amusing that one of the best received episodes of Discovery so far ("Magic to make the Sanest Man Go Mad", and also, I hate Discovery episode titles so much) is the one that's most like classic Star Trek. Basically, the crew wind up in a 30 minute time loop that they have to try break, except it's mostly not from the perspective of the one guy who's aware they're in a time loop. It's a pretty decent episode, if you ignore the fact that it absolutely destroyed the character of Harry Mudd. Apparently there's a new episode out now. I'm very confused, because Netflix kept saying "coming Monday!" since more than a week ago, and then at one point, said "Coming January 23rd!" which is not a Monday but I assume they mean Monday US time anyway.

2018-01-09 01:10:53 +0000 UTCThe Empress of Mars is worth watching for a laugh. It's genuinely sickeningly awful in every way. It looks like shit, the writing is shit, the concept is shit and the acting is abhorrent. It's the only one I couldn't force myself all the way through. I normally love Mark Gatiss though, so disappointed.

2018-01-08 23:53:14 +0000 UTCWith ABBA being my favourite artist I lost my shit when you started "singing" Gimme Gimme Gimme. Speaking of which, are you familiar with the musical Chess? Produced by Benny and Björn from ABBA along with Tim Rice, if you haven't seen any of it I seriously recommend it. There is a concert version from 2008 on YouTube featuring Josh Groban, Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal if you're interested.

2018-01-08 22:11:26 +0000 UTCDan why not when you are happy to realise the book add a special patreon section of "you want to help me publish my book so help with $X " I know it may be somewhat pointless but then people can do more then just help you out but do for help for something specific

2018-01-08 22:05:40 +0000 UTCI do enjoy Star Trek (TOS AND TNG) if it happens to be on, but because I'm so used to more conventional pacing, I have a hard time choosing to sit down and watch it when there are other options available. Discovery, though it's far from conventional Star Trek is just a bit easier for me to keep up with, I really like some of the characters and ideas it uses (love me a good time loop story). I'm aware this may not be the best place to post this. I just wanted to get it off my chest somewhere.
Tom Chaney
2018-01-08 21:51:58 +0000 UTCYou should take a look at discovery again, episode 10 and they've switched to a parallel universe where the humans are the bad guys and basically space racists.
2018-01-08 21:38:41 +0000 UTCDan, have you watched any of The Orville yet now that it's playing in the UK?
Josh Ikin
2018-01-08 21:18:28 +0000 UTCI agree about Game of Thrones, that's why I only read the books, they're better in pretty much every way

2018-01-08 20:34:15 +0000 UTCI'd advise going back to watch Knock Knock and Oxygen, I've heard quite a few folks (not just me) say they're among the best of the series. Mummy On The Orient Express has some decent elements going for it too

2018-01-08 20:17:58 +0000 UTCPayday 2 VR! Got me back into VR and I'm quite excited to play it again. Never got into Payday as an FPS, just didn't enjoy it, but having to duck around and crouch under things to hide is fantastic fun

2018-01-08 16:07:26 +0000 UTCIt works fine with 3 and is best is 4 players actually. You are correct though. 2 players isn't the best.

2018-01-08 14:31:29 +0000 UTCI believe he claimed that he uploaded it without monetization enabled, then (someone at) YouTube monetized it briefly without being asked to, and then he noticed and de-monetized it. It's anybody's guess whether or not this is true. I'm not inclined to give such a douchebag the benefit of the doubt. I will say, though, that the video apology he made covered the bases pretty well, in terms of what you should say for a proper apology. I gather an earlier tweet was more of a failure, but I saw the video and I think it was well done. Again, though, it's anyone's guess as to whether he actually felt bad and actually meant the apology, or just did a good job of acting the script he was given by some very pissed-off managers. All in all, it would be nice if he just disappeared. His content... isn't content. He's bad for... everything. Good riddance if so.

2018-01-08 14:28:07 +0000 UTCYou should really give The Orville a watch. Despite it being a parody, it's definitely the best Star Trek around at the moment. Now, I detest everything I've seen with Seth MacFarlane, until The Orville. It's got the bright future feel of classic Star Trek, just ignore the humour (especially in the first episode)...

2018-01-08 13:01:04 +0000 UTCDan: By the way, you rattled off your idea for a pilot episode of a Star Trek series and some of us encouraged you to Make It Happen. Have you given that any thought? Like, even just as a fan film, or even just a script for a fan film. I really feel like you're the sort of person who _should_ be writing Trek storylines. Either scripts or books.

2018-01-08 12:11:11 +0000 UTCDan, question; will there be an audio book version when the book is done?
2018-01-08 11:57:47 +0000 UTCWow, Dan, thanks for the heads-up on The Peanuts Movie. You're right, the visuals are surprisingly faithful, considering they're 3D-ish. I adored Peanuts as a kid, probably read every collection there was at the time. I think I'll watch it after I finish the podcast. :)

2018-01-08 11:35:58 +0000 UTCThe only way I can make Discovery in anyway enjoyable is that I consider it good science fiction but terrible Star Trek.
