Fuck Yeah, Doctor Who - S11E01 - The Woman Who Fell to Earth

Not content with helping to get Tim Schafer to write my books foreword, Mike Bithell has now accidentally made me start a Doctor Who Podcast. What a git.

The first episode of our regular/one-off Doctor Who Podcast.

FULL SPOILERS for Series 11, Episode 1 and the fifty-five years that preceded it.

It's nice to know other people go back and watch these too

MxChatter

Humanity having a chance was a nice message to hear in 2018, but Jesus Christ it is needed in 2020 XD

Daniel Fitch

Also, I also have a 4th Doctor Scarf. The bugger's 18ft long.

Fairy Nuff

This guy made Thomas Was Alone? This guy's a GENIUS

Fairy Nuff

I loved it, soooo good

The thing about this episode specifically is that it's possibly the first time in Doctor Who where they have needed to introduce so many things in one episode. Not only do they need to introduce all of the companions (or friends as they were called which I don't really like but whatever lmao), they also needed to facilitate the new viewers to the show since this season is being written for new viewers too. Which meant trying to make it easier to understand and hop in on and....basically they had a lot to worry about with the plot so the first episode was quite all over the place. Overall I enjoyed the episode. It's not the best "New Doctor Episode" that I've seen but I definitely give the crew a pat on the back for trying their best. Hopefully in future episodes it gets better.

What would you say is the worst episode?

Faithless_Lehane

Urm yes please

D&D Lemur

In Chibnall's defense, that whole "it's the same screwdriver" doesn't make sense because in Smith and Jones, the Doctor fries his sonic and just throws it away.

I’m just gonna add my thoughts about the new series here if anyone wants to read them. So… I’m one of the few who didn’t particularly like it, I’ve already had a fairly long conversation with a friend about that and she didn’t really like it either but for slightly different reasons. Now I didn’t like it because of the dialogue mainly and I blame that on Steven Moffat, he wrote the doctor too well because apart from that Jodie seems very doctor-y. Now my friend didn’t like the plot as the main point, which I also wasn’t massively keen on either, but it also just didn’t seem as good as other first doctor episodes. So those are two of the reasons we didn't really like it but are still willing to give it a chance to find itself a little better. And now can I add my comment about grandma coming back, I think that the reason she was killed off, and will stay killed off, is that because the doctor is now a woman and Ryan has lost both his mother and grandmother therefore losing his two most prominent female role models and now the doctor can be that female role model for him.

Nathan

Fun fact, if you're exposed to vacuum while holding your breath, your lungs will burst. Actually that might not be that fun for them but you get the point. Also my favourite part was "I'm a woman? Does it suit me?"

Narmatonia

You say In the Forest of the Night is the worst episode of TV but it's not even the worst episode of Who.

m0sifer

You should definitely do more of these

GamerGeorgeXl

Im a new fan of the show and saw a tweet from dan saying this is a good season to start watching so im super happy and loved the first episode.

I really didn't like the making a new screwdriver thing, because (as shown in the 50th anniversary) the last screwdriver was the one the doctor has always had, and has cherished; having the doctor just mislay it and go "ah fuck it, I'll make a new one" is something approaching like the doctor losing the tardis and just going to galifray to get another: It wouldn't work, because the tardis is not just A tardis, it is THE tardis, just as the sonic is THE sonic. All they needed was for the core or Chrystal or whatever to be taken from the last one, just to keep the lineage, and I would have been fine with it: as it is, I'm not all that happy about it.

Well Read Nomad

I'm so IN!

Capaldi felt like the whole run was a regeneration episode

Shawn Lindsay

the funny thing about this is, you can say Regeneration's are Extra Lives

Elysia Caelum

I loved this episode! And I had no doubts about Jodie whatsoever, and she didn’t disappoint. She is The Doctor! Interesting that I seem to dislike Moffat for the exact same reasons Dan loves him. I think there’s probably a story arch theme in this episode, but it’s not as clumsy and obvious as in previous series.

Agrajag

I'll admit, I was a bit nervous about "the female Doctor" but I'm quite pleased that that's not what we got. We got the Doctor and it was great. I've avoided watching any of the teaser stuff up until now (besides the initial reveal) so I really wasn't sure what I was getting in to but yeah, within a few minutes of her being on screen, I was like "oh yup, this is definitely the Doctor, I had nothing to be worried about." I'm very keen for this series now. Also, it took me far too long to realise that that was Bradley Walsh.

Christopher Kennard

I really want to see the new tardis and the new intro, which you kinda saw in the background of the credits, but blurry.

Jellex

I just watched the new episode, Jodie is a bit Matt-Smithy, but all in all great.

Jellex

Hey Dan do you like Steven Moffitt much , I couldn't tell from this episode?

Morgan

iplayer and/or netflix

Scott Sutherland

I have watched 0 doctor who... Is it worth getting into, and where can I find it?

Collin Regalia

Who else thinks that the floating light Ryan touches at the start, looks a bit out of place and may be coming back.

Toby cooper

when i reached the point where you said that capaldi got more miserable as he went along i could tell that dan had stopped watching and that mike may have started to pay less attention to the show, as capaldi was one of the few doctors the had become more friendly and warm as his era as the others tended to get darker like tennant or smith to an extent went along as he went from not liking hugging in series 8 to hugging clara the first time they meet at the start of series 9, and basically become a grandfather/father figure to bill in season 10 you really should give capaldi another go as he is the new series doctor most like a classic doctor. on another note love the podcast. even if as a classic who fan some of the mistake made me cringe... joking.

Josh Lambert

oh god

rusty
