The Patreon Podcast - Episode 47 - The 20 Best British Sitcoms

Fiiiiiiiiiight!

- Dan

Comments

Hey dan I recently became a patreon supporter and I’ve been going through your old padcasta. I’ve just watched your 20th one where you y’all about your top 10 TV moments and you said to mention what our personal top moment were so I thought I’d put it down here considering that podcast is from last year... my top tv moment has got to have been from the latest episode of the grand tour where at the end the three of them go through their year together on top gear and grand tour and it made me realise that that shows been my childhood for 19 years and seeing Jeremy Clarkson cry made it all too real. 🙂

Alistair jolly

I quite like father Ted

Ashley klinkhamer

Why is Dan unable to say Edgar... it's EDGAR WRIGHT... NOT EGDAR WRIGHT. JEEZ

Malachy Hamilton

Dan. SPIDERMAN swinging. IN VR. WITH JETPACKS!https://store.steampowered.com/app/587220/Jet_Island/

Sir Uncle Ned

Thoughts on Gravity Falls? I think I remember you mentioning at some point that you were going to check it out. I recently watched the whole series and absolutely loved it.

Miranda Walker

Hey, Dan! There's a game called "Rolled Out!" that I think you should check out. It's a spiritual successor to Monkey Ball and has just launched an Indiegogo campaign for funding. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/rolled-out-a-love-letter-to-super-monkey-ball#/

Zion Aitken

You should do an episode rundown of It's always sunny in Philadelphia.

Johnflipper5

How are you finding days gone? I'm having fun with it, and finds it absolutely beautiful. And the way the tension can build up during missions and free roaming is amazing. I do think it suffers from rockstar syndrome in that it's mostly go to x and kill/interact with y. Not really much variety there sadly.

I love Rebecca joining in on the podcasts. I don't love the shade you're throwing Father Ted's way, nor the mean, accurate, criticism of Fawlty Towers. Overall, 4th best British podcast.

Thomas Knight

Just became a patron because of how much I missed your podcasts, no regrets

Dan can you please do bookreviews on the toys channel?

Mathieu Marlaire

a new one that will have definitly claimed a place in my top 10 would be Derry Girls (ps. rebbeca and your back and forth on these past two have been really fun )

I never knew about the Chris Langham pedo stuff, now I understand why he disappeared from the Thick Of It

Callum Brown

Patrick Stewart is in American Dad! as Bullock the CIA Deputy Director.

Mainline421

I don't think I could make a top 20, but I know for sure that Red Dwarf is my favourite sitcom of all time

Callum Brown

Look them up. Some are great.

Mr. H.

Detectorists was a BBC 4 comedy and was incredibly wholesome and lovely

Harry Barr

I also used to live around the corner from the open all hours shop in Doncaster.

Kim Clarke

I liked the dectorists.

Kim Clarke

I once went to a Fawlty Towers “experience”, which was a sort of dinner/show thing. While it was somewhat funny, I have strong memories of fear when they were interacting with “guests”.

I was a bit surprised of how few sitcoms I actually have seen or have a good enough memory of (the lower part of the list probably suffers a lot from that). I get all obsessive with one thing and only watch that for quite some time. I’m definitely going to check out some of your favourites though (starting with a rewatch of Only Fools and Horses) 1. Red Dwarf 2. Black Books 3. Spaced 4. Only Fools and Horses 5. The Thick of it 6. Inside no 9 7. Blackadder 8. The League of Gentlemen 9. Episodes 10. Peep Show 11. The Vicar of Dibley 12. Porridge 13. Keeping up Appearance 14. 15 Storeys High

Agrajag

Just wanted to say that I've been really enjoying the past couple podcasts with Rebecca and I think that just like with streams, she really adds a lot.

Luka Morgan

Think the reason why Fawlty towers is so highly rated is that it's very cathartic for a lot of people. Especially those who have worked in customer service

Mark Fletch

i'm not british so I don't even know any of these shows.

m0sifer

The actual best 1. Only Fools and Horses. 2. Porridge, 3. Red Dwarf 4. Young Ones My own favourites. 1. Monkey Dust 2. Only Fools and Horses, 3 Gavin and Stacey 4. Dad's Army.

Matthew Oliver

Dan, with respect to Blackadder series 1 fucking up Rowen Atkinson’s role so bad, perhaps the blame should be put on one of the lead writers - Rowan Atkinson. All the better ones had Ben Elton instead

Stuart O'Hara

1. Fawlty Towers 2. Only Fools and Horses 3. Blackadder 4. Young Ones Easy. At least for the big influential ones. The ones that still have relevance today. For example, people have an issue with the German episode of Fawlty Towers. The joke being Britain hasn't gotten over the war, with the rise of Brexit, it's more true than ever!

Edit: I forgot about Community. It should definitely be on there, but I don't know where, I feel like I enjoy it on a slightly different axis to the rest

Tom Chaney

Alright, my list is America-heavy, because most of the British comedy I enjoy is sketch or stand-up: 10. The Cold Swedish Winter. 9. Welcome To Our Village, Please Invade Carefully. 8. The Wilsons Save The World. 7. Brooklyn 99 (it's best episodes could be at 2, but overall it's here). 6. Outnumbered 5. Old Harry's Game. 4. M*A*S*H*. 3. The Good Place. 2. One Day At A Time (the 2017 remake). 1. Crazy-Ex Girlfriend (don't let the title put you off, it'll make sense when you watch it, it's all on Netflix)

Tom Chaney

Scripted, narrative fiction, non-sketch comedy series are sitcoms, mostly because there's nothing else for them to be, but I do have to side with RT on that front

Tom Chaney

Don’t even know what you two were talking about half the time but still enjoyed it.

Scott

1. Only fools and horses 2. The vicar of dibley 3. Blackadder

1. Only fools and horses

My top 14 (as I've only ever watched 14!): 1. Only Fools And Horses 2. Porridge 3. The Vicar Of Dibley 4. Dinnerladies 5. Open All Hours 6. Outnumbered 7. Blackadder 8. Waiting For God 9. Mr Bean 10. Keeping Up Appearances 11. Allo' Allo' 12. Dad's Army 13. Last Of The Summer 14. Fawlty Towers But it was really interesting to hear which ones are your favourites, and I'll definitely be checking out a few that you spoke about :-)

Zoe Green

Did Rebecca call Dan a 'soy boy beta cuck'?

Addison Reilly

Top 10 cos I'm lazy: 1. The Thick Of It 2. Vicar Of Dibley 3. Red Dwarf 4. Blackadder 5. Black Books 6. Spaced 7. Peep Show 8. Green Wing 9. The Office 10. The Inbetweeners (Haven't seen OFAH, Dinnerladies, and lots of other ones you praised highly)

George Farren

I Kind of like Not Going Out , it has basically become a show of Dad jokes but i kinda like that

Shawn Lindsay

The Detectorists is fabulous.

Mr. H.

Dan! Have you seen that Edgar Wright's next movie is going to be a horror movie set in London? Also I don't know shit about British sitcoms (even though I'm British) but you two politely arguing made it worth it :P

Narmatonia

We love you Rebecca!!

Max Tal

People who come here just for Dan - I'm sorry I'm in two in a row!

Mr Rebecca
