Just like Matt Easton would say, "It depends on the context." Camping - hatchet or tomahawk. You're going to need it anyway. Home defense - whatever you can wield inside the house effectively. EDC? Let's get real- construction tools are excellent weapons - a 16oz long handled hammer is something many a knight would have been very happy to have and almost every carpenter has. Crowbars are also nice. But understand something, if you will have an EDC, go through this exercise, start a sentence like this. 'Well officer ..." If you can't reasonably end that sentence with something you're willing to go in front of a jury with - leave it the fuck at home. If you have to use it you WILL be dealing with the police and the District Attorney.

So if the minimum it's easy to assume an attacker can get, like sharp metal... then the minimum you want to have an edge is a gun... Or at the very least... put your own sharp metal on a long stick.

Going blade to blade with anyone anywhere for any reason is an extremely bad idea, even if protecting your home. A bow in a house, arrow nocked, would make me stop. You can't remotely reasonably advanced against someone with a bow ready. Also really true of a sword, axe, spear, etc. So home invasion scenario, all great for both defender and intruder; but if both are armed, then it's a stand off /stalemate. But yes, in the US most people will shoot the home invader or street machete-wielding thug/psycho. A medieval type weapon out on the streets won't get you immediately shot or anything, but acting too crazy while getting too close to people will. The average medieval weapon enthusiast could peaceably carry their favorite sword and only get looks most places I think. Since a knife fight is a essentially losing before starting, I have bedside guns, and a pretty well locked house.
