Cruise Ship Murder- Dr. John's thoughts on Kenneth Manzanares
Added 2021-06-08 18:04:18 +0000 UTCKristy Manzanares was brutally beaten to death by her husband, as two of their daughters watched, while on a 2017 Alaskan cruise. The Utah man--Kenneth Manzanares-- was sentenced last week in federal court to 30 years in prison. The tragedy is something Lauren and Dr. John have been following since it happened. Kenneth Manzanares' sentencing was brought up at our dinner table, along with many of Dr. John's opinions on the sentencing, domestic violence, and thoughts on Kenneth. The case hits close to home, literally. Kristy and Kenneth were our neighbors and we had mutual friends.

The point about him getting so much leniency because it was DV, not a stranger, is sickeningly true. As a victim of DV, I was mindblown by how poorly I was treated by the legal system and how much he got away with. Thank you Dr. John for explaining that it goes back to the idea of ownership of women by men. Still sickening but at least it makes more sense now.

Noone cares until victims are dead, not police, not courts, not even family. I did not grow up with my father abusing my mother. Misogyny hurts everyone and this is still the primary driver of DV.

As an OCS Worker, I had come to hear her out and put eyes on the small, Inupiat Woman. She had been flown in from a nearby village, after she had been shot by her husband with his hunting rifle, .... you could see the bullet’s path grazing the top of her head, her fingers blown off when she had up reached up to divert the gun....Four months later, during the Court on this DV/CPS case....This woman pleaded for early release of her husband...It was caribou season on the tundra and families depending on the meat to survive the winter..”We need him home..he’s a Good Hunter”....The cycle of Domestic Violence becomes normalized...and ppl who work in this arena almost desensitized.
