I was noodling around on Reddit the other day and discovered that Coleman attended an evangelical “Christian” church that espouses some belief in something called the “serpent seed” theory. Something about 2 races formed in the garden of Eden, one with the serpent’s seed and another with God’s. It’s hard to wrap my mind around anyone buying into this crap but there you have it. So, it seems there is a religious angle to Coleman’s crime like the Daybells.

Wow! These people who listen to Q anon, could they be getting some kind of hypotonic thing from listening to it? What do they call that? It just seems so strange that there seem to be so many people believing this crap. Or is social media just showing how life has always been? Are there more crazies out there? Or is it that we are now all interconnected through social media? Are you being more accepting of people who are nuts by giving them a platform to attract more people?

Thanks for your reply too. While respecting that I’m sure your have it very clear in your mind and how you can personally tell right from wrong or filter stuff, I just find holy books very ambiguous. I’ve read the whole bible and there is some horrible stuff in there that people use to justify all sorts of stuff. I’m very glad most people who believe have not read their bible nor take it literally cos there are some scary ass things in there for sure. It’s an anthology written over many years by many people with different motives. And every believer and reader decides it has a different message- So it all comes down to someone’s own ideas on things really- whether they chose the nice parts of the bible or the bad parts. Same as with any holy book really. I’m very thankful mostly people are decent- so they absolutely overlook the scary parts or like my mum would say of my distress over the Passover story “ just ignore that part- it doesn’t sound like anything Jesus would do “ Yeah for sure but geez his dads pretty horrible, was my takeaway. I’ve seen people in everything from new age stuff through to Catholicism, JW, Mormons- all have their own take on things and I think some people are just good people. Those people will ignore their pastor who tells them to shun their gay child. They’ll find a scripture that fits with their morality. The scary people are those who read a scripture and go against their humanity and kill or shun those they care about, because they think they’re doing what their scripture says. And proving their love by making a big sacrifice. So it’s all a big quandary- sometimes the worst thing that can happen is that someone takes their religion seriously and reads their bible fully. It depends on the psyche of the person reading. I think my mum just had the very simple “ what would Jesus do” and landed on charity, feeding people, not judging people, helping with charities, inviting people to Xmas who had no family etc. she did all that stuff but hateddddd religious talk and didn’t read the bible. I guess her faith was just in the nice Jesus guy, and she was very aware that humans aren’t magical so she didn’t think priests were special at all. It made it easier for me as an autistic kid who likes facts and truth- that mum wouldn’t tell me off for pointing out contradictions or unethical evil actions in the bible from god- Made it a lot easier that mum could see how evil some parts were but just say to ignore them. I just couldn’t ignore them myself. I’m kind of glad of my brain type because IF I had been religious- Lordy I would’ve been the most literal pain in the ass dogmatic rule follower who may have ended up doing horrible deeds to prove my faith. Religion on the wrong hands - very dangerous thing indeed. Add in psychosis and you’ve got some real issues that can happen.

@Tad Auty - I just love your comments! Thank you so much for responding to my post, I enjoy these types of conversations, as long as it’s respectful and we allow the other to hold a different opinion other than our own. I noticed that I must not have been clear, because I do believe that the Bible is the word of God, and we do NOT have the option to pick and choose what is and is not truth. PEOPLE create religion, that is the manmade part, which is why religion CAN become a cult if you are not careful. I think this is where we might agree, people take religion and create their own belief system. I have no problem believing that the Bible is the word of God, the Bible is not a religion, it's faith as stated in the Bible. Let’s make this simple, Christianity is a faith (Christ in, I believe in the salvation message of Jesus Christ), Protestant or Catholic are religions to deepen your relationship with God, those are the “standard” examples of Christian religions, it’s not necessary to list all of them. My point is, people tend to pick and choose what parts of religion they want for themselves and CAN create cults, in Chad Daybell’s case, he determined he was a profit, I am not a Mormon, but I am sure to guess this is far off the beaten path of what the Mormons believe. Matthew Coleman, same thing, he went to a different world with these lizard people, nowhere in the bible does it talk about lizard people. This is not limited to Chad, Lori, nor Matthew, our history shows that we have repeated this time and time again, the KKK created their own religion from the bible. I once read a book called PEOPLE OF THE LIE, by Dr. Scott Peck, he writes, telling a lie in it of itself is not evil, it’s when that seed takes root and you start to believe your own lie, that’s when it becomes evil. It seems to me, everything starts with a seed of truth, but somewhere it gets lost in translation, and becomes evil. And what does Hitler’s right-hand man say? ““If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” I have no problem with God, but I do take issue with manmade religions, and work hard at not allowing religion to gage my relationship with God. At the end of the day, it’s all about your relationship with God, not your religion. I look forward to your reply, and I hope this makes sense 😊

I avoided knowing too much about this case because of the graphic horror. I appreciate y’all covering it. Ed Sheehan has a song in which he says he doesn’t want to become one of the beautiful people. It reminds me of Dr.John’s thoughts. Accepting reality (all of it) can be so painful. Deep thoughts. Thanks again for sharing.

Thank you, I was disfellowshipped, and yet because of their overwhelming brain washing with exact same info for five hours a week meetings, personal study, warning the world,(door to door) hopefully studying with some of the world weekly. Family study and couples study. And more, it took me approximately 14 more years to come to a complete awareness that they are a cult. Easy to physically get away, but not emotionally. Even now if I’m not careful I can find myself arguing doctrine. And that was not the only reason I left my children with their father. (A narcissist) but it was the main one. I was so oblivious for most of my life, I liken it to, I don’t know why I never just accidentally stepped in front of a bus! 😁 I have a good life. Just not with 6 my children. My oldest was already 18 and gone when I left.

That’s the trouble though- you’ve just gone and made a heap of claims about God being real and that the bible is real while then also saying to ignore some of the bible parts- You’re not alone in that! But then it just comes down once again to what you decide is real to you- or moral to you Eg Jephthah did actually kill his daughter in a deal with god - god ordered the deaths of men women and children of multiple tribes. He killed millions. Many people can find a way to justify slavery, force’s marriages and murder etc, using their holy book- the same one I was raised with. So it’s either follow the book ( the bad bits or the good bits people have to choose ) orrrr it’s follow your own feelings/morals …. Once again can get dangerous if people are delusional. By the way I don’t know if there are any gods but one things for sure, I haven’t seen any decent evidence for any of them so far, but I’ve definitely seen religion cause harm to peoples grasp on reality- or the anxiety or worrying about hell or demons etc ( but I know some people think they’d rape and kill if they didn’t believe- they have no moral capacity without someone telling them what to do- I prefer those folks stay at church ! Lol ) PS I’m glad you’re free of the JWs but I’m so very sorry about the losses that come with that escape. I have many ex JE friends who sadly suffer way too much from the disconnection policies.

I remember when I was a kid, I was fascinated with the “End Times,” bible stories. About what the world would look like before Christ returned to take his children home. The Bible tells us that families will fall apart, husbands will be killing their wives, parents will be killing their children, people will be killing each other, basically total chaos. I remember looking at my family, and thinking, HOW COULD THAT BE POSSIBLE?? It never occurred to me that my father was physically abusive, and my mother let him beat us kids up, it wasn’t until collage that I learned that physical harm was abusive. As a daughter and sibling raised in an abusive Christian home, now turning 60 years old next month, there are a few things I’ve learned. a) God is interested in our heart, which is why he sent his son to die for our sins, religion is a MANMADE vehicle to get us pointed in the right direction, that's all it is, RELIGION is different than a RELATIONSHIP. We as a society become very legalistic with our "religion" and do stupid things and then blame God ... Jim Jones, Lori Vallow, Chad Daybell, even Henry the 8th, they all believed they were doing "God's work" they were "helping" but in reality, they were taking their RELIGION and the Bible and making their own religion. b) the only “closure” we are guaranteed in life, is when they put the last nail in our coffin, c) if you want to change somebody, stop! That’s not your job. The only way to change a situation is to ask yourself this very important question, what have I done to add to this situation, how have I failed this person, identify, apologize, and move on. Nobody owes you anything, if change comes, it starts with you. If God ever tells you to kill anyone, question it and seek mental help. God said in the bible that the children are His MOST PRECIOUS people, he speaks very harshly to those who hurt them. If you hurt a hair on their head, you WILL feel His wrath. I do hope these crazy people who killed these children get it together soon, we may look and be totally disheartened by what they did, but once reality hits them, that kind of pain will become unbearable. If it were me, I would want to stay mentally in a different world, so I wouldn’t need to face it, but there are dead children, and my relationship with God is more important God promises to forgive, but I also need to accept this worlds punishment for what I've put the victims family thru. Total forgiveness doesn't come from getting what I want, it comes (again) from the heart, the journey, the lessons along the way.

Michelle Matas

I agree that it is important to focus on our humanity. We all love the stories like Harry Potter where you find out you are this extra special being - destined for greatness. But that’s not reality. I get it. Reality isn’t usually glamorous and not always comfortable. I think we’re all vulnerable to this type of magical thinking. Stories like this remind me to keep my own feet on the ground.

Emily Lou

Thank you Dr. John & Lauren. I always appreciate the way you break things down, especially on such sensitive topics.

Jeanine Harrop Hansen

How or what is the difference between seeing things because you don’t want to see reality, or your brain is actually ‘seeing’ and ‘hearing’ things that aren’t there?

April Bowman

I was writing my biography, of being an ex Jehovah’s Witness, but it disappeared. Just some of my experience of believing in fairy tales. I was clear, succinct. I’m sorry I lost it, but you probably didn’t need the whole of it. I haven’t been a Witness for over 35 years now. But 6 of my children still are. It’s a regret I will have till I’m gone.

April Bowman

Agree with above comment- you need to keep that expression “ That rings a daybell” it’s perfect. I wish critical thinking and reasoning were taught from early childhood. Though many educated people still can go off kilter with dodgy belief systems. I think there are two types of people- people who want to believe in true things, and those who want to believe in things that make them feel better. And though it sounds like a contradiction, some conspiracy people are kindddd of making themselves feel better on one level. They think they know what’s REALLY going on- instead of accepting that sometimes horrible things happen to good people- or acts of war- disease etc…. Which is so random and scary ( but real life ) - some prefer to think there’s some Illuminati or Q or cabal etc that has control. The devil. Etc so to some it’s like thinking they know the conspiracy gives them a sense of power- but- weird thing is- they freak themselves out and end up even more scared cos the reality they decide is true is scarier than real life. This stuff is hard with some mentally ill people who don’t have a decent grasp on reality, but when you add in religion it can become worse. And the pandemic scared people. And lockdowns meant they got on the internet wayyyyy too much. I wouldn’t be surprised if Matthew had some kind of mental illness and recent events pushed him further into delusions. But it would be very interesting to know if he was a narcissist control freak too. His wife validating his ideas could be cos she was on board or obeying like a dutiful wife, her head of house, or simply cos she was scared of his response if she challenged his reality.

Tad Auty

I definitely think his wife was next! Do you think drugs were involved?? Such a sad sad sad case 😔💔😩 IMO... Lori and Chad were true believers. But I also think Chad knew he was deceiving others to an extent.

TriciaTheTrucker

Does that ring a daybell?- was tickled by this. Very sad crime. Thank you for the insight. So much conspiracy theorists and just reuse of this material on social media. It makes me nervous that we aren't using critical thinking. And I do know folks who believe in the amphibian aliens. But not that they are bad or secret world leaders. But maybe a bit paranoia?
