AUDIO VERSION OF HEATHER DAYBELL PART 1, PLUS THE AWFUL SONG CHOICE AT TAMMY'S FUNERAL

Lauren here. It was good to see so many of our Patrons in chat tonight! Here is the podcast version of Heather's interview, ad-free. Below is a link to an ad-free video of "Part 1" . We hope to see you in chat tomorrow for "Part two"!

Also, I've already received many questions about the song Heather said was sung at Tammy Daybell's funeral. My mouth dropped on camera when Heather mentioned it, and Heather and I started singing the chorus together. It's an old traditional LDS hymn that I would never choose for a funeral.

Here are the lyrics:

You can listen to the song here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/music/library/hymns/put-your-shoulder-to-the-wheel?lang=eng

My thoughts: It's not a song about grief. Not a song of care or concern or love. Not even a song about God. It's a song strictly about WORK. If you want to know how Chad saw Tammy, it was someone who worked, and should be working.

I'm reminded once again how Tammy wanted to spend some time playing the video game Frontierville, and Chad manipulated her with a story about her grandmother swearing and yelling at her in vision, telling her she should stop playing her damn video games and work on family history. Tammy's "grandmother" then excused Chad from doing the same work, since he had books to write.

It's an appalling story.

A basic Google search (Chad was good at using "Google Search" according to FOIA docs) shows us many sites who share classic LDS/Mormon hymns sung at funerals.

Even the official Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints website has an index for members to use to help them find appropriate religious hymns for different events/themes. The traditional religious hymns "Nearer my God to thee" and "I need thee every hour" would be a much more common choice.

"Put your shoulder to the Wheel" is listed under songs about duty and commandments.

Sigh. Even after death, Chad had Tammy working and following. "Do your duty with a heart full of song. Don't stand by idly looking on, put your shoulder to the wheel"

I can only hope that Tammy is finally someplace warm, drink in hand, laying on a hammock and playing whatever damn video game she wants.

Lauren.

I've listened to Heather a number of times. I admire her intuition, clear voice and her strength. I hope to be a stronger woman in the future. Thank you Heather and Lauren, for your wonderful example.

That's so far from a funeral song 😱🤯just...wow!

Absolutely fantastic interview. I am so sorry for Heather and her family being dragged into chad’s nonsense. The patriarchal family stuff and it’s role in religious life really stuck out. Finally hearing someone cutting through the risible LARPing is like a drink of cool water. Good on you Heather.

Joanna Mulvaney

Thank you all. To Lauren and John for being good listeners, and Heather for her courage and honesty. Greatly appreciated.

Mary A Leck

I thought he was saying nice things about her and Tammy wasn’t a nice person?

bfly

My goodness, he couldn’t even respect her in death.

I want to name every wooden spoon I have, Heather. My heart breaks for the intense gaslighting she experienced through all of this. I’m sure the last thing she wanted to be was right. I think she was born a truth-teller and could not stop asking questions even if she tried. Heather, thank you for sharing your truth. You are a woman of true grit and grace. I hope you can feel the love and support this community has for you. You, Ma’am, are a badass.

Great interview! Scary but insightful.

They aren't allowed to identify with the church when they do this stuff. The church takes away their membership, it's called "excommunication" in the church, and that is what happened to all of them after the church found out what they were doing.

Vicki

When Heather mentioned Chad trying to manipulate people to think ill of Tammy it sounded so familiar. I know someone that has always tried to turn people against each other. Doesn’t matter if it’s work, family or friend groups. For a long time I believed their lies and manipulations. It was a huge and sad wake-up call when I realized what was happening. I blame their behavior on growing up in an alcoholic household. Would love to hear the good doctor’s insight.

Jo Ann Morgan

I’m not understanding how these fringe groups exist alongside the LDS faith? Certainly they aren’t endorsed by the mainstream LDS church; so how are all these people allowed to identify as LDS yet write these obnoxious end of the world books making their own predictions without getting into trouble by the church? I also grew up in a high control group and this sort of thing would never be allowed.

CL

She is definitely Chad’s greatest nightmare. Not surprised he tried to keep her out of the family at the beginning. Frankly, not unlike Tylee. Outspoken, intelligent and honest to a fault. I have no doubt he poisoned Tammy against her and deliberately kept them apart. I love Heather’s honesty. She’s amazing.

Emily Lou

I feel it’s like playing that song “I’ve been working on the railroad” lol.

Edie Miller

Boy, can I relate to Heather. I am so glad that she did this interview with you two.

Jennie Anderson

This was exactly the truth I have been waiting to hear, heather is an amazing woman and has the discernment so many indoctrinated Mormons lack. I am not bashing the religion as I am a member of the LDS church , but if it smells like BS we all have the ability to find our truth . Heather I honor you and am so grateful for your committed stand for truth. Lauren and John I am so grateful for your integrity and for the work you do.

Anissa Teree

So good. When is part 2 and 3?

Audra Garrett

Phenomenal interview Lauren and John! I can't wait to see the rest!

I’ve been to many many funerals for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In sixty seven years I never ever heard that sung at a funeral. Chad and his group are odd. It’s their own religion. We are taught to have food storage to save money and have enough for at least 6 month. Mainly In case you personally have a disaster like lids of job ,illness. These others are extremists it’s common sense to savvy money and food . Covid taught us that and now food chain.

Fun2 Cruz

Gosh! Some of the things she talked about were reminiscent of my in-laws of my second marriage. They wanted us to buy all this stuff. They MADE ammunition for their guns, and had us help. They had tons of food storage, and had us help them with their massive garden. His parents would talk like crazy with him about the last days, and then they wanted us to when they moved to Idaho. My ex-husband wanted to move there too, and they built a large (almost hanger-like) storage building that we were "supposed to" move all our stuff to. I was going crazy with it all. My ex was so manic at one point that I just couldn't take it anymore. The marriage ended in 2012.

Vicki

“Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel” is a truly awful choice for a hymn at a funeral. Our family owns a mortuary and my funeral director husband is just shaking his head.

Pamela Mosdell

I looked up the song after the premiere ended. Absolutely maddening. I feel so creeped out 😭

Edie Miller

It was a great interview so far. I am anticipating tomorrow. Great job Lauren.
