2023-01-08 10:31:01 +0000 UTCDr. John...There have always been bullies. There have always been children living in situations that cause them trauma. But there haven't always (in this country, at least) been mass killings at schools ("school shooters"). What is different? Is it the widespread disintegration of the family unit? Is it a decline in traditional moral values or religious beliefs? Or is it something else? Thanks for your thoughts.

2023-01-07 04:54:03 +0000 UTCDr. John, thank you for discussing the effects of childhood trauma that is becoming a national mental-health emergency. I'm currently studying to become a parenting coach and public speaker for parents who have lost their children due to abusive behaviors. I firmly believe that there is no child ( K-5th) who heads to school with the intent to become a bully. That child has been taught cruelty is the way you handle conflict. I try to teach my children to see classmates who bully as victims of trauma. To have empathy ( and really good firm boundaries), for them to think about what their home life must be like if that is how they reacted to not getting to be first in line to lunch. As a child who grew up in the system, I know firsthand what trauma looks like. I survived because I was taught how to handle big upsets. I was given skills. We have to start helping our children process and build a good set of skills to handle upset. I can not thank you both enough. You are helping me with more than just "couple goals". You are helping drive my professional goals, your work is important and impactful. Thank you Lauren for always being professional and lovely.
