Today’s lunch break (Weds, April 26) was hard to handle for me. Sorry, I know posting on the feed is preferable, but this is sort of for me, anyway. From prior information released we knew JJ had a plastic bag over his head, but I did cling to the idea that Lori gave him “eggs” she got from Alex. I had gotten some weird consolation that JJ was most likely already passed away before the bag. Today that last bit of human decency was torn away. I can only surmise Lori wanted the Valium for herself. And Lori knew the monster Alex was, she’d sent him to kill husbands. Lori is never going to see the light of day again. And John Pryor should just tell Chad to try a plea deal, or kiss his backside goodbye.

Wow. Lynette that was an amazing observation. Thank you for posting that!

I get it. This case is so convoluted. I struggle as well trying to find a morsel of goodness in these people but they are all just so horrible.

I was thinking about this too, like he completely validated Lori. I was also thinking when you're about 12, and you start writing fiction and narrating your own life inwardly, it's easy to feel you're at the centre of the world. You're not of course and hopefully you grow up (I did unceremoniously!) And it's a normal part of human development but I don't think Chad ever grew beyond that.

Erica, thank you yes, this is good to anchor things because he wasn't just an innocent guy thank you for this

If you find yourself feeling sympathy for Alex you can revisit some earlier discussions recapping his past behaviors and crimes. Many were done way before Chad and Lori even knew of one another. He SA’d an underage girl, SA’d his ex wife, violently assaulted Joe Ryan and boasted about it. Murdered Charles, attempted to on Tammy and Brandon and possible killed the children. This man deserves no redemption story in my opinion. He was evil all on his own.

Re: Does Chad really believe all this nonsense? I think like other religious cons, he started out knowing he was just making stuff up, then got attention and adoration (throw some money and sex in there, too), and his ego probably started making him believe the ideas in his head actually came from god.

I love your weekly updates and the coverage of the case. Thank you

Dr. John and Lauren, I wanted to bring something up that I think may have been missed by many people, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on. It was a calculating and truly diabolical move on the part of Jim Archibald and Lori against Zulema. Those who know LDS doctrine have probably heard the doctrine that the only people who will be cast off in to perdition/hell forever, with a no possibility of redemption are those who have actually seen Christ, and had their “calling and election made sure”—the guarantee of the Celestial Kingdom—and then DENIED that. In Archibald’s last question he was maliciously trying to see if Zulema would “deny” her temple experience, which would damn her for eternity according to her faith. Lori knew Zulema had had the experience Archibald described. So calculating and mean. Really beyond the pale for a court proceeding. No wonder Zulema fell silent. Whether you believe any of this doctrine or not that’s a horrible thing to do to someone. I’ve resisted using the word “evil” for 4 years, but along with the murders, this was evil.

Once a week is enough for your analysis. Thank you. East Idaho provides the audio of testimony, and those audios are hard for me to hear. Just bits and pieces. My mental health and sleep is important to me. Concerned about you both for submerging yourselves in these series of dark events. Religions often seem to not value this life and present moment as much as they do an afterlife. I am not a theologian, but I did go to a religious grammar school. This is not just an LD S inspired perspective of afterlife glorification. Just a thought and observation. War and the killing of the “other” seems to be justified - manipulated through religious dogma by governments. Those who serve are left with the PTSD, and need to either rationalize or self medicate to deal with their actions. Actions from orders by higher ups that, if not followed through, the “soldier” can face severe consequences if not obeyed. The individuals involved in this case were-are delusional in their beliefs, and in some ways remind me of the actions I mentioned above, but in a very specific, up close and personal way, not justified by a threat that impacts nations and safety. Justifying the need for war and killing of others in the name of defending national safety sold to us by media and the military industrial complex is highly questionable. The sell that makes killing the “other” justifiable. That includes the murder of children.

I felt really bad for Alex after this week. I know it sounds crazy. I felt bad that he was taken advantage of by Chad and Lori. It's like he took all the religion/beliefs/concern about Lori to heart, and on the wave of self-righteousness and belief *potentially* killed others for it (we know he killed Charles). It might be the defence trying to paint a clean picture but it will be interesting to see the full thing in time :( It's just so much more heart breaking if he killed his neice thinking he was doing the right thing. I felt like the way her body was treated was like the actions of someone who didn't know how to get rid of a body..... But if they weren't just trying to process a dead body... But trying to follow Zulemas "Book of Shadows" word for word in how to cleanse a body and soul, it's just even more heart breaking.

Listening to the trial recently and the things she has said, I have started wondering if JJ was too much associated with Charles, Jay & Larry etc. In the interview with police after Charles murder, she talks about how Charles was all about JJ and *not Tylee* and he was a bad parent because he wasn't equal. However, I feel like we know she projects and I wonder how much JJ became more Charles adopted son and less hers. I think that line that Melanie said that it was hard for her to be with JJ and Chad showed she was detaching or detached from JJ. I could almost understand it but then I think about the death of Tylee. But. If Tylee knew too much about the real details of Charles death and maybe threatened to share, then like Charles and Tammy I could see why they would want/feel they had to silence her.

Julie Port

Evil blended with righteousness is the worst kind.

My daughter is the same age as Tylee when she died - 16 at the cusp of 17. That video of her police questioning was so sad. I bet her mom told her that if she didn’t stick to the story, she and uncle Alex would go to jail. Kids that age are funny. One minute, they’re ready to move out and the next they’re clinging to us wanting to stay in the cocoon of their childhood home. Tylee had no secure launching pad. Home was a moving target. Her mom was distant and competitive. Her dad was dead and estranged. Her stepdad had just been killed by her uncle, and her mom was now completely lost to these extreme beliefs. My heart just hurts that her life was cut short so soon like that. Both those kids went through hell.

Emily Lou

Do you have anything more concrete or some confidential evidence you can't disclose to back up the idea that JJ's murder was driven by Chad testing Lori's loyalty? Because the text messages and conversations between Lori and various others (Chad, Zulema and MG) seem to show *Lori* really pushing this idea of JJ being a zombie, and others (including Chad at one point) resisting the idea. I'm not sure that Chad's evident insecurity is really strong enough evidence for a leap to Chad demanding a child sacrifice.

Happy birthday, Julie!! I wanna be just like you when I grow up.

It's true. According to the Book of Mormon, Native Americans were the descendants of one of the lost tribes of Israel that migrated to the Americas around 600 B.C. In addition, according to Mormon doctrine, this tribe divided into two groups, the Nephites, who were whites, and the Lamanites, who became black as a punishment for worshiping idols.

Thank you guys! Love Saturday fate night!

Thank you so much John and Lauren!

Sheila Blair

Isn’t the violence in the Bible and the Book of Mormon pretty dispassionate?

Nancy G

Look, if you believe the beliefs of the LDS Church, which are pretty out there (as are many religious beliefs), it’s not a stretch

Nancy G

Thank you for your commitment to this case and your gems 💎
