HTC Updates for Patreon Members

Hello Patreon Members:

This is John. Thank you so much for your support over these past several years- we are so grateful and our Patreon members have truly allowed us to continue our journey into the true crime world to this present moment. As many of you know Lauren has been covering the Daybell trial in Idaho for three weeks- now into the fourth week- and I have remained in Las Vegas with our young son. The repercussions of this arrangement have been that we are woefully behind in our production schedule for Patreon- and elsewhere (including our weekly podcast)- and we wanted to provide an update on current and future plans so that our community is aware of our upcoming plans and future direction.

First- pertaining to this month's book and the book club. We will be meeting this coming Wednesday April 26th at 6:00 pm PST. The book I assigned is Shot in the Heart by Mikal Gilmore. Given my more limited time for reading over the past several weeks (I have never read this book before) and my increased time commitments for parenting, I am well behind on the book. For this reason, I will be moving the April book club assignment (same book) to May- and the May meeting will be on Wednesday May 31 at 6 pm PST. It became apparent to me today that I would not be able to complete the current book- my sincere apologies- in time for the meeting this Wednesday. Instead, the meeting this week will consist of a broad Q&A on any or all topics related to crime and/or mental health. Because we are deeply immersed in the Daybell trial and case I would anticipate some discussion around that topic, but all questions will be welcomed. If anyone has any questions in advance of the meeting please post them here (or on the book club page- see below) and I will review them before Wednesday. Many of you have asked for book club assignments far in advance of our meetings and I will do my best to provide books several months beforehand in the future. Several people have also been confused by the lack of a book club link on Patreon. Usually Lauren posts that link on here immediately after I place the link on our book club page, but this month the link became lost in the confusion of the trial and was only posted on our book club page and not on Patreon- my sincere apologies for this oversight. Please find the zoom link for this week's book club meeting (now Q&A) here:

https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84840065169?pwd=WkhhTGVFWEtWWkxjT0N5bFh2ZEVzQT09

All Pateon members can also receive information about current and future books we will be reading on our book club page, which is here:

https://bookclubs.com/hidden-true-crime-book-club/meetings

The book club page also includes the zoom link to any upcoming meetings, including the meeting this week.

As for future plans and content we anticipate discussing some of the following areas above and beyond any impromptu HTC "snacks":

1. An in-depth discussion of the Netflix movie The Stranger. For those of you who have not watched this show please consider doing so over the next month. It is a fascinating- and somewhat fictionalized- portrayal of Australian law enforcement's efforts to capture Brett Peter Cowan after the disappearance of a thirteen year old boy, Daniel Morcombe. In addition to the exceptional acting in the movie, which swept Australia's version of the academy awards, the movie (based upon actual events) raises so many questions worth discussing. We will be discussing the movie in several Patreon-only episodes.

2. We plan to host monthly live Q&A's either after our live shows and/or some time during the month with the goal of more intimate interactions with our Patreon members.

3. I (John) have been researching and planning a short series related to Dennis Rader, the BTK killer. Although Rader has been examined in some depth by other forensic psychologists, I don't believe that an accurate portrayal of his underlying psychological dynamics has been fully developed. We hope to provide a unique perspective on the BTK killer only on Patreon.

4. I (John) have been working on a book related to the criminal mind since 2019. I anticipate sharing various chapters from my book only on Patreon as my writing progresses. I will post both written and audio versions of each chapter placed on Patreon.

These are a few upcoming upcoming ideas we are developing for Patreon members and, of course, we will pursue other content based upon current events and developing crimes along with our regular crime "snacks" once Lauren returns home. Please also send us your ideas and thoughts related to content you would like to see us cover or any other ideas where we can add value for our Patreon members.

Again, we are so grateful for our Patreon members. We are also deeply appreciative of your current patience, understanding and support in spite of the recent dearth of Patreon content due to the many competing demands for our time at the current moment, which we anticipate will change as soon as the Daybell trial reaches its conclusion.

Thanks again for all the support and encouragement,

John

One name , lots of questions.. has John done any digging into the murder of little harmony Montgomery ? And her monster of a father Adam ..

Brittany Rohr

John, I really like when you share movies and books that you recommend!

Sheila Blair

Also, I think John's idea (and the subsequent brief discussion that was had at the last book club meeting) about exploring the question of "Why" people are fascinated with true crime would be a wonderful subject to pursue in depth. The person I live with has been known to walk through the room while I was watching Dateline/20/20/48 Hours, and intone, "And then they found her head in a hatbox...". He thinks my fascination with violent crime is odd, so (aside from grinning and letting him know that hatboxes are non-existent these days), I have ended up feeling a little defensive about my interest in the subject. But I don't feel that way in this group!

Karen Rose

Dr. John and Lauren, I am really appreciative of the heart and soul you both put into your podcasts, lives, and this community. No "talking heads" here---we've got whole human beings who are giving us so much, and from their whole beings. I was a bit disappointed about the cancellation last night, but that's because I've been sick in bed and was eager for connection with everyone. It's a strange thing to have been obsessed with true crime over many years and never having had anyone to talk to about it--so there is a richness in being part of a community that really cares about the people, cases, and subjects discussed herein. I could never be as eloquent as many of the members of the community are (I'm thinking of the book club discussions, especially), but I know I will continue my deep enjoyment of the process here

Karen Rose

Thank you for this information. I have had Covid, and watched the movie while under the influence of that, while also editing photos. I think I need to go back and watch it again now that I am getting better. I appreciate these links so that I can have more awareness of the actual case before watching the movie again.

Karen Rose

Such a sweet offer. True dedication. This community is awesome!

Karen Rose

What you say makes great sense to me. When you're in the middle of things with a strong personality, it can be overwhelming. My tendency has always been to take people at face value, despite having been hurt by doing so in the past. The kicker was when a person I had been friends with for 40 years (!) suddenly rejected me last year, and showed no interest in talking with me about what had happened. All of a sudden, I began going back in my mind and finding little hints that all had not been as I would have wished it to be in the friendship for a few months prior to the ending. I grieved for 4 or 5 months as though this person had died--the physical sensations that had been there when I lost other dear ones to death. Gradually, I came out of it, realizing that I had seen what I wanted to see--I had idealized my friend over the years by emphasizing in my mind the best parts of who she was/is, and de-emphasizing that which was unlovely about her way of seeing the world, and treating other people. We can sometimes see much, much more clearly from a distance.

Karen Rose

John I can help with citations if you like. I am proficient at APA, MLA, Chicago, & Turabian. I have the manuals, too. I have access to TurnItIn, too.

Dr. Vonda Kaye

Thank you so much for the update. You guys are doing great considering all that is going on. No pressure here - just grateful to be a part of this community you’ve created.

susan crounse

Please talk about that family murderer in Utah. Haight.

Nancy Fowler

I see this as an extension of the YouTube channel and I am just happy to support you guys consistently on this platform. Thank you for all you both do. And family first always.

Rachel Bingham

You and Lauren have a lot on your plate right now and I think we all understand. Sending much love and light.

Laura Biddle

I am kind of glad the book discussion is delayed; I still had 2 hours left in the book as of last night! sorry I missed the Q&A - I fell asleep again! Hopefully it was recorded! I will absolutely look at the movie the stranger! Looking forward to more information and discussion! Take good care of yourselves! 👊

Truenorth

Dr. John not sure if you are following the Leticia Stauch trial or not but Forensic Psychology testimony started today. She has a not guilty by reason if insanity defense so videos and experts galore. I would LOVE to hear your impressions when you catch up and get your wife back. Here is a link to today's trial testimony. https://www.youtube.com/live/5ZmAWgXr6ik?feature=share

Shelly

Hey Dr John and others - here is the recording I mentioned in regards to “The stranger “ movie. The congestion with undercover police https://youtu.be/3yuuCNGbyYk And this one is a police interview with him where he knew they were police https://youtu.be/YVaXszVUCKI (Which I think was before the sting ?) And his wiki has a good outline for those interested in the real guy behind the character in the movie https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brett_Peter_Cowan

Tad Auty

I didn't quite finish the book either. Postponing it's review is appreciated. Do you think Lori's slip of the tongue in her and Summer's call is enough to convince the jury she's guilty? I'm not confident they'll make the connection unless the prosecution poi ts it out in summation. I'd be interested in Dr. John's opinion of Lori now that we hear her on tape with her sister. And why do you think she asked Summer to call her?

Maryanne Bourgeois

I watched “The stranger “ I usually don’t like fictionalised things but it was really well done - plus I already knew the story but it wasn’t spoilt at all because they really captured the whole thing so well. If you haven’t seen it - after you’ve watch the doco- there is a video of the actual conversation on tape

Tad Auty

Dear Dr. John, Thank you and Lauren for all of the content you both provide. I think I’m one of your first Patreon Members😉. I’ve gained so much insight into the human psyche and I’m forever grateful. I’ve been busy preparing for our granddaughter’s USC graduation that I too, have had little time for this month’s book. Please take care of your family. I’m looking forward to our next book club meeting.

Debi

I can be in Vegas in 4 hours if you ever need a babysitter. I used to drive up all the time for my grandsons. But if you need to get to Lauren or anything else, just holler!

Anne McClaran

Thanks for all you and Lauren do. I am behind in reading Shot in the Heart, too, busy trying to keep up with the live tweets for the trial and watching the YouTube coverage at night. There is something about this case that has ruined me for all other true crime, well, maybe the Murdaugh case was a close second. The players in the the Vallow Daybell case, the perpetrators, conspirators, and the followers who appear to have gone underground terrify me. How in the world do people who seemingly can function relatively normally end up believing in and acting on such heinous ideas? Chad’s theology is laughable, ridiculous, to my mind. Like Christian Nationalists, his politics were scarily fringe right wing ( he joked about shooting the “liberals” who would be refugees pouring onto their Zion during the Tribulations.) What I really want to know is how pervasive Chad and Lori’s ideas are in that part of the world. I have always lived in the North East, in or near cities. I have a hard time believing anyone could think such things. But here we are.

Kate FitzGerald

I haven’t finished last month’s book, so I am all good waiting. I’m immersed in your trial coverage!

Valorie Dodart

Shucks I just wiped out my whole comment. Covering the trial is enough work. I can wait for the other content; which appears thought provoking and will be on my list to watch/listen to. Please take care of yourselves and banks as high priority. I hope you get a break for a week when it’s done.

Dawna Quittmeyer

I think you’re to do list is plenty full. What you have planned is intriguing and I know will be thought provoking. But I can wait. Personally I think just following/discussing the trial is enough. You will get to the other content when it’s over. Please take some recoup time afterward. This has not been easy on your family.

Dawna Quittmeyer

I am a little relieved—but I do have a question. (They postponed an eye surgery for me until tomorrow at 3:15 which would have meant I couldn’t join until late for this book which I am really enjoying.) Though I know we won’t be discussing the book. There was one line in it that really made me think of Lori Daybell and might be an interesting thing to mention tonight given the trial. In Part four chapter 5 the writer says of Gary’s suicide attempts “just because someone is faking craziness doesn’t mean they aren’t crazy“. I know crazy is a problematic word, but I thought wow this really may apply to Lori mighten it? Even if there is a little malingering or manipulation, isn’t it part and parcel of her mental illness?

Lynette Butler

I agree, your wife being gone means you are “Mr. Mom” and are needed at home. I have one question for you: is Bryan Kohlberger autistic (Asperger’s)?

Patti Togioka

I am new to your Patreon and to HTC and am loving it. While I’ve followed the Daybell case from the start, I somehow didn’t find HTC until the Murdaugh trial and your series on shame in family systems. I joined right after that trial and have been binging on all of the interviews and your fascinating body of work on the Daybell case that you and Lauren have compiled. Agree you make an excellent team and your insights are incredible. Keep up the good work. Excited for the BTK analysis as I recently saw an interview of his daughter, Carrie, and one of the original BAU profilers on STS podcast. His daughter frequently gives interviews and is incredible in her resilience and being able to still talk about these things. It’s totally understandable that covering a trial of this magnitude would set you back. Suggestion for the future would be covering family systems and role they play in crimes or criminal behavior, like Murdaugh. Also a literature buff and major here so love the insertion of Poe and other references. Keep up the good work, both of you. As a new mom, I don’t have time for the book club just yet but am looking forward to it one day in the future. God bless.

Sarah LeBlanc

Not to worry about delays in Patreon content. We all get bogged down at times. It would seem impossible for you to keep up with posting considering Lauren is covering the Lori Daybell trial.

Susan

I shared this on YouTube, but I will here, too. Your coverage of this trial - particularly Lauren’s overall trial coverage- are the best out there. Just from a sheer information point of view, Lauren is just shining. Her journalism creds are definitely showing here. There is some strong competition so that’s saying a lot. I also love Dr John’s interpretation of the events, so that adds an extra dimension. Good job, HTC!

Emily Lou

I live in Orem, Utah. I used the shoe repair in Provo where one of the murders took place. I lived these events in real-time all around where I live. The execution was televised and I found it fascinating. It was a scary time in Utah County. Not to mention Gary Gillmore was all around also. Great book. The movie is pretty great also.

Kim Chapman

Oh good! I've been scrambling to finish the book, so I'm delighted that the discussion of it will be next month. BTW, it is a fascinating book--both long and hard to put down. You and Lauren make a great team--as a couple, as parents, and as the creators of Hidden True Crime. Keep up the good work.

Monica Caplan

Very excited for what is upcoming! The book club actually works better for me in May, because currently super busy redoing our yard and I haven't even picked up the book yet myself.

Amber Ferdig

Well said Ammie! For our family (especially during COVID) technology and video calls were like glitter glue.

Lisa Breck

Dear John and Lauren. As a parent and educator, it is very important that you undertake the team parenting as seriously as you do. I’m certain many of us share the sentiment. Lauren is exhaustively following this case to a point of sacrificing family time. She must be constantly triggered by evidence and testimony. She is exhausted, for sure. So thank you for all you do. I don’t feel you’ve let anyone down. And patience is a virtue. Im hoping she can fly home soon!

Ammie Doering

Dr. John ~ thank you for sharing your family values and as well as your passionate career paths with us. You two are incredibly talented individuals who make a terrific husband/wife team 🥰. Lauren is so dedicated w/ her daily coverage! Refreshing to listen to dedicated professionals talk about their children’s best interests being central to their lives. Teamwork in today’s lifestyles. Thanks for integrating the parenting and family side of your story 🏡❤️.

Lisa Breck

Yes so true on many points. Children 1st… they grow up so quickly and need us most during those tender and impressionable years.

Lisa Breck

We are your village, no apologies needed. Remember to put your oxygen mask on first, then you can help others. Addiction is the root of crime and we're all addicted to your content. Don't let anyone knock you off your game. Ok, I'm out of cliches. Your latest bookclub pick was difficult on me due to parallels in my life, but I got through it. Just as I got through 66 years of other challenges. Always put my kid first and you should, too. Here's a new cliche: don't be a Lori!

Carla Perkins

Dr. John, Thank you for this opportunity! I have a question for you pertaining to how to personally handle the “breakup” from a dynamic personality (i.e. cult leader). I can see how, and somewhat empathize with people like Melanie G & Zulema, and how they ended up in the middle of Lori & Chad’s fantasy world. (When you’re IN this stuff, the language seems quite normal; when you have to broadcast it to others…it then sounds kooky!) **I'm not excusing them; just seeing how it could have progressed. I was raised in a Mennonite community—but was not part of the church, therefore spent a lot of time being “an outsider.” (I’m now 60, and am still processing all that) About 20 years ago I was “spiritually and socially love bombed” by a new friend. His personality was dynamic, and I felt privileged to be a part of his inner circle. It’s only been in the last couple of years that my gut feelings won out, and I began distancing myself---there’s so much to this story, which includes he and his wife living at my house, and LOTS of stuff over the years…to finally, his death from cancer this year. (I think his death actually surprised him! Ha) But, the bottom line question for you is: It’s so difficult when a needy social and spiritual Self is hijacked. Can you suggest a good way for people to pull away from such a person or group and then to heal, and learn to trust yourself to trust people again? (I find it’s just easier to isolate and live the life of a happy hermit! 😊) **P.S. As a business owner of 30 years, I see that HTC is in growth mode now—it’s exciting. (It won’t always be as exhausting 😉 Your perseverance will pay off) Keep up the great work!!

Angela M

You guys are wonderful! I can’t imagine juggling all that you are right now. I always say, family first! That’s so important. Keep up the great work, and no stress!

Carly Fontana

I have been missing in action lately too. Why? My 22 year old moved home for her last semester of college to student teach. It doesn’t matter what age your kids are, if you are a good parent, they take your time. I remind myself that I am a better parent than Lori Daybell because I understand this. I’m trying to make things easier for her as I cook dinner every night, make sure she has something to pack for lunch, all while working a full time job myself. My point, it’s understandable that Banks is your priority, especially when you are single parenting temporarily. The work Lauren and you are doing is amazing and I look forward to the future. I thought I would be involved with the book club, but haven’t been. I want to be, but right now that’s a future goal due to my family. My wants wait until my responsibilities are fulfilled. You and Lauren are good parents and know how to prioritize. A skill that isn’t celebrated enough.

Tamara Wakeman Sukohl

You two keep expressing that you are sorry for falling behind with Patreon, but as for me, covering the Daybell trial and discussing the weeks high points with Lauren have been more than plenty! Please don't push yourself too hard. HTC has the best coverage and insights of this case, and I look forward to your other content when you have more time. It is very ambitious!

Jennifer Priebe

Ps You and Lauren are doing a great job with this channel- love all the upcoming ideas and plans - don’t over overload yourselves. I hope you and Banks are having n good times though I’m sure you’re missing Lauren! The coverage of the hearings has been great and the weekly analysis is fantastic too. Thanks for all the work you both do. It will be great to have a bit of a list of upcoming books as I had a really hard time to get this months- I’ve ordered it now the zoom is delayed I’m hoping I’ll have it and read it in time- However a Q and A zoom sounds fantastic. Don’t panic about being late with the book :-) Ps the Netflix episode is a great idea too.

Tad Auty

I appreciate everything you and Lauren do. I'm so excited about all the great things that you two have planned for us Patreon members. And being able to support you guys in a small way as a Patreon member is absolutely worth it. Lauren's trial coverage has been amazing. Again, thank you both for all you do. ♥️♥️

Stephanie McBride

Dear dr. Babe, Please don’t stress about being “ behind” on Patreon commitments. You both give so much value and dedication already. Compassionate goals💞 Life and work happens to us all. With love and respect from Sweden, Karin

Karin Baird

No worries! Thank you for all you do! I'm behind on finishing this month's book as well, because of the trial. So moving it suits me just fine. :) Big shout out to Lauren who sits through the trial, live tweets it, and then sits through it again with us! I can't imagine how mentally exhausting that would be. Everything else can wait. This trial is the moment we've all been waiting for. We all are distracted by it, so we're all in the same boat. :)

Katie Alosi

Oh excellent ! I will have to watch the Netflix movie. As an Aussie I remember the Daniel Morcombe case - my boyfriend is from Brisbane and was living there when he was taken. He said his face was everywhere on posters. The footage of how they got his confession was mind blowing.
