/155/ Aufhebonus Bonus ft. Benjamin Moser

We start off by discussing the beheading of a French teacher for having shown his pupils the Mohammed cartoons in a class on free speech. Then we discuss your points, questions and criticisms from September and October (on class politics, antifa, Covid, unemployment and more). Finally, 25 minutes of bonus content from our chat with Sontag biographer Benjamin Moser on the 1619 Project, identity politics, literature, and cosmopolitanism and empire.

Agree so much with George on „there is no non-liberal antifascism, because there is no fascism“.

Sensible Captain

I suppose with the comments on the pod about the killing in France but don’t quite agree with the criticism of the Jacobin article. Yes, it should be obvious that the correct response to an incident such as this is to condemn it absolutely—there’s no moral conundrum here. At the same time I see a kind of racism in the failure to condemn it—as if slaughtering people “is something that Muslims just happen to do occasionally, we just have to put up with it.” And in the French context there _is_ an attempt to use this incident to ratchet up pressure on Muslims over unrelated issues, as if there were some logical connection between wearing a headscarf and murdering somebody. “Classical liberals” and Islamists have a nice racket of mutual complicity going where they can both keep escalating against each other while accusing the other side of being essentially intolerant.
