Young women and young men are voting very different from each other – and this is happening across very different countries, from the UK to Tunisia to South Korea to Brazil. Why is there this crossover between gender and ideology?
- Have women become more 'progressive' as they've gained equality?
- Are young men staging a backlash against #MeToo?
- Are young women more responsible for wokeness?
- Has politics itself changed, so that left and right are culturally and gender coded?
- How was it different in the 1950s, or the 1980s?

Ultra-normie and take here, but I'd argue a big issue for young men is the lack of positive role models, especially when compared to young women. Discours around "toxic masculinity" make it very difficult to establish and promote positive "male traits", which are not just "be more like a woman". This leads to a lack of role models who are genuinely attractive to men AND not in (partial) opposition to wider society. The only three role models I can imagine existing right now are John Galt (the exceptional individual), Andrew Tate (self-explanatory) or Barack Obama (good guy and nice family man).

2024-03-07 19:50:44 +0000 UTCMarian theology (which really has no place in protestantism, and subsequently gets short shrift in political theology conversations) could also point to a difference. Perhaps Mother Mary provides less of a need for women and men to seek new and daring ways to distinguish themselves in an officially egalitarian society.

2024-02-26 04:59:36 +0000 UTCGreat episode. I wonder what it would have done to reintroduce theology, and religious shadows on the secular culture, to this discussion. South Korea, where the divide is apparently sharpest, is also the most irreligious of the countries mentioned. I tend to line up with Talal Asad in thinking of contemporary secularism as a sort of recoded, radical protestant puritanism. This line of thinking could maybe also help explain the radical political divisions unfolding as well--for both left and right.
