Book Recommendations - Ethics
Added 2024-03-23 22:07:15 +0000 UTCHello my wonderful Patrons!
Since there was some interest in less edited content and some book recommendations, here is the first one! I thought I would start with 5 recommendations on books to explore some of the key ideas in ethics.
Thank you all for your continued support, and I hope you enjoy the short video!
P.S. Let me know if you like this sort of content, as I may make more of it if there is an appetite.

Joe - love that you highlight Kant's *Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals*. It was a favorite of mine at university and, I feel did an exceptional job establishing a foundation for ethics, introducing the categorical imperative, autonomy of the will, universal moral law, and moral duties based on reason, not inclination. - Great choice & I appreciate the brevity of the post, although I also enjoy getting absorbed in your more detailed commentary, so really a win-win.

2025-03-15 04:20:56 +0000 UTCMy two cents is that this short format is very enjoyable. I'll always take book recommendations in general because I’m a non-college educated, just-retired guy who decided studying philosophy and math might help keep the brain matter from becoming mush. I had NO IDEA that philosophy covers such vast areas of knowledge! I started with Russel's History of Western Philosophy and been letting that guide me. as you make book recommendations could you sometimes choose a specific area of study and mention a few books that illustrate how this idea developed over time?

But maybe read the suggestions comments and messages perhaps even reply or do i live Q &A on youtub or wherever, maybe here. Not sure if thats possible. i love all the music from mozart to midnight oil, lots of long driving in the outback or in the mountains of america https://youtu.be/ZvwNntwaAIY?si=2C6htW-Y5fAGEfSh

2024-10-01 02:35:11 +0000 UTCRubbish? Hardly. You call us, your Patreon patrons "wonderful." The fact is Joe, you're wonderful and your presentations are nothing short of amazing. I never get tired of listening to you. If you're putting out material of such outstanding quality now, one marvels at the thought of what sort of essays you'll be posting in years to come.

2024-06-07 00:31:12 +0000 UTCNot at all rubbish. Interesting and worth pursuing if these have not been read. A good mix of perspectives on the subject. The format is appropriate for shorter pieces that share information like this. (Also, it makes you appear more “human” and fallible, in your shortish jumper 😆) Thank you! 🇨🇦

2024-05-02 18:01:29 +0000 UTCI don’t know. I don’t tend to delete comments but I know YouTube’s AI moderator is very over-zealous. I often see comments disappear before my very eyes on YouTube Studio.

2024-05-01 23:14:49 +0000 UTCI have had several posts disappear from your last video. What's up with that?

2024-05-01 22:49:13 +0000 UTCI can certainly recommend some books about logic, that may end up being the next one! J.L. Mackie is certainly worth a look - he has an admirably no-nonsense style which I really appreciate

2024-03-28 22:57:43 +0000 UTCAh I always like "The Diving Bell and The Butterfly" by Jean-Dominique Bauby as well as "The Consolations of Philosophy" by Boethius for thinking about death. Two very different approaches to ending up in an unpleasant situation, and near-certain death staring them in the face

2024-03-28 22:56:56 +0000 UTCJ. L. Mackie's Inventing Right and Wrong sounds like something I'd enjoy reading, something about philosphers who just burst in on an hypothetical philosophical argument and tell all the parties involved "y'all wrong" just tickles my fancy. On that note also enough watching videos discussing Beyond Good and Evil and time to actually pick it up and read it on my own, see if I can draw some personal insights out of it. Would definitely like to see a book recommendations on logic.

2024-03-24 20:46:59 +0000 UTCI like this format, more "private" and feels more natural, the way you talk. And yeah great content even though it is less scripted. Thanks. About what I want... I really appretiated the video about death, maybe if you could recommend some books in this area as well? For example facing the idea that one may die.
