Quest for Legolas

I seem to have spent 30 years searching for "my" Legolas. I've gone back and forth depicting him since the late eighties - dark hair, light hair, longish hair, short hair, and even one Orlando. I think this may come closest to how I really see the character - with that quirky humour when he advises the Hobbits to dig a hole in Lothlórien to sleep there, and proceeds to swing from a branch.

I think movie-Legolas is just too "First Age Noldor". I always felt Legolas was very different from those high-Elves in other places of Tolkien's writings. Much more down to earth and a lot less lofty.

Or gave it to Gimli. Who just couldn't handle it all.

Poor Legolas - much as he tried he could never really keep up with Gandalf and Aragorn in the snark department. Of course, the movies stripped most of the humour from the dialogue and replaced it with.... something else.

Erin and Dale

Me too - just Vegan spoilsports. What an insult to vegetarians and Elves!

There is one instance where "his dark head" is talked about, but that may refer to the fact that the moon/stars are behind him. Around the time JRRT was writing the Lord of the Rings, he decided Sindar were to have dark hair, so I settled on dark-haired Legolas. Golden-haired Thranduil I always saw as a relic from the old Hobbit days.

Looks a lot more like "my Legolas" than Orly. Just in my head he has very straight and very dark hair. I'm very glad your Legolas shows signs of the humor the movies so thoroughly removed from all elves - I'm still sad there were no silly mocking Rivendell elves in the Hobbit...

Is his hair colour actually hinted at somewhere in the books? Can't remember it. So, the films give the somewhat wrong impression that Sindar actually all had fair hair?

I'd say it looks great, but that goes without saying! I like the decidedly non movie take on our Mirkwooder.

Paul Leone

Have you ever seen him in the snow? :D

Looks scarily like my work colleague! o.O
