Why did the aura of the Law of Desire gut-punch everyone but Calyn? Perhaps BQ simply came up with a better direction after B2C23 was out. Or, more intriguing, perhaps it was intentional foreshadowing that suggests Calyn deeply resonates with Law of Desire and so was unaffected. Like Greg. I'm going with the latter. Consider: CALYN (B2C23) "...the allure of the man before her seemed to have shot through the roof. Something about the unquestioned authority that he seemed to effortlessly wield caused her blood to run hot...“I… I want to have your baby!”" Sounds like the effects of Greg's LUST AURA + improved law body. But what about the opened door that jacked up everyone else? Calyn was unaffected. EVERYONE ELSE (B2C24) Greg's sister: "I’m sorry, Roka, I’ll be a better sister, just don’t leave us anymore. Don’t leave us like Dad left us" Greg's mother: "I’m going to die alone" Lothar: "Who am I fooling? I’m a cripple. That’s all I’ll ever be" Alena: "I… I wanted… want to kill you" Every other human (Olivia doesn't count) had hardcore bad juju come up. Not Calyn. Hmmm.

The soul-level, hellish torture that almost broke her? Per B2C8: "Alena didn’t judge herself too harshly for what she thought while in the grip of the worst pain she had ever felt in her life. Still, she couldn’t help but wince every time she remembered the dark thoughts she’d had concerning Roka at the time. Far from being grateful to him for not giving up, she had started to get angry at him. Rather than thinking of it as the consequences of the process, she’d started blaming him for the pain she was being subjected to. She started thinking that Roka actually wanted to cause her this pain. That he was actively torturing her instead of helping her. That, like Thane and Senna, her two former friends, Roka too had betrayed her. He had pretended to care just to get close to her. He’d used her just to get on to the path of being a mage. Now that he had no more use for her, he was using her weakness to get rid of her. She had gone down a deep and dark spiral of all the ways that she would get back at him for the betrayal." There's no record that she addressed this, so when the Law of Desire brought her shadow front and center, guess what came up. Trauma doesn't go away because it's inconvenient, at least not in real life. I'm glad it's surfacing now. I selfishly want their relationship to be beautiful with as few barriers as possible.
