A Herbology lesson - sketch

Another commission for Sandra, who requested another Newt Scamander scene. Here, he's required to use a Severing Charm to get a Bowtruckle off a branch in Herbology. Of course, Newt wouldn't be Newt if he didn't go for a less intrusive way to do the task. (I had a lot of fun with the guy in the background, who clearly has no qualms getting that Bowtruckle off his branch no matter what. XD)

I don't know if you can see it or if this is another of this "artists are their own worst critics" thing, but the sketch looks a lot different than anything I've done - it just came together really detailed and still quite fast, and I'm really happy with it. I've been horribly unhappy with my sketches in recent months; in Rebecca's class, all I really did was to lightbox photos, which left me horribly dissatisfied. I have no problem with lightboxing - I've done it a lot for Inktober, but for complex scenes from memory, lightboxing is a horrible hassle that never turns out right despite being ten times as much work as just freehanding things. I realised, even back then, that I would have to get back to freehanding, and somehow find a way around my anatomical issues that didn't rely on photos to fix. Exaggerated poses definitely is a good way to go.

I look forward to seeing this when done...looks like a fun scene :-) I've never done light boxing, but do use photos for reference and find that helps. At least for the details/positioning. I have a very long way to go in feeling a smidge as good as you though.

I just love the movement and expression in this sketch! 💜
