Maedhros returns (aka Fëanorean group hug)
Added 2017-11-18 22:22:32 +0000 UTCI've been wrestling with several pieces - did rough sketches of Maedhros sitting with the crown in his hand and making up his mind; a very quick and quickly abandoned sketch of him being brought before Morgoth; but in the end, I returned to this one, which I actually sketched years ago, and really liked the setup. The problem was that I'd stopped at four sons, and getting seven into any picture always ends up horribly crowded. XD
I can never make up my mind whether Amrod is there or not. The story him him being burned with the ships is so poignant and I want to keep it, but then it's not *seven*. So I adopt the story for Losgar, basically, and throw it overboard whenever they need to make a magnificent seven style appearance...
I'm going to keep this loose and zoomed out. Like a happy scene in a movie that recedes to give the characters their privacy. I think it's a very fitting feel.

There's a couple of things that the fandom collective ignores - one is that Maedhros should actually be Maedron! XD The Amrod-burned-with-the-ships, I think, was in the last volume of HoMe published, which I got around 1996, so it was years for me too. I usually accepted everything that brought new info, but the Amrod story has such large consequences for the further story that it wuold have required extensive rewriting (the same with Gil-galad as not being Fingon's son.

I think the good (?) thing about the "did Amrod die?" conundrum, is that depending on how you want to either paint a picture, write a fanfiction or imagine a scenario, it's up to you if you want ton include him. I agree that him dying on the ships is very poignant, but for a scene like this it makes sense to have all the brothers together again :D

I didn't see that version until years after I first read The Silmarillion, so it always feels to me like blink-and-you-miss-it alternate canon. But that counts for nothing, since I like other obscure or alternate History of Middle-earth versions of the canon. But I am glad to see seven brothers reunited. I cannot wait to see the finished version of this! I think it is a terrific choice.

2017-11-18 22:49:47 +0000 UTCAh, the family reunion! Happy Feanorians, all seven of them - pure bliss. As for Amrod, there's this fan theory of Ambarussa-as-two-souls-in-one-body, which niecely combines the two existing versions of the story. Though I admit it might be tricky to draw ;-)
