Gouache ROCKS. If someone could tell me how to avoid candy colours, that's up next. XD  Right now, this looks like straight out of a fairy tale book (which I'd buy at once.)

Gouache on Etival cold-pressed paper, 18x24 cm.

The fact that I managed to paint all of this at my booth today says a lot about my convention day.  -_- It was soooo slooooow. I had a table in the most remote corner of the hall - the only chance to find me is to know I'm there and go actively looking for me. :(

So, I'll be painting more tomorrow...

I did that, but it seems gouache needs more of it! ;) White is a good call! I'll try around. :)

You can usually tone down a colour with a little bit of their complementary. Too much will "muddy" it. I also use a bit of white if I don't want bright colours.

What a beautiful picture! I really love the look. I'm sorry your day was slow, but hope it will pick up. I know , if I was there, I would totally enjoy watching you work up close :-) Here's to a better day!

Saturday is usually much better, any maybe it'll pick up tomorrow. I'll make a bit of plus, and the uninterrupted drawing/painting time at cons is something that I weigh in gold anyway, so all of that makes it all right :)

Thanks! I was thinking Sepia, but you're right, Grey would probably work better. I realise I totally have to relearn - or at least rethink- colour. Grey watercolour is something I never used, I always mix Ultramarine and some Brown. I did that here too, in copious amounts, but it's still bright!

What a gorgeous painting! You are so right about the fairy tale book. :D ... I'm sorry to hear about your slow convention day. Can you choose where your booth is located or is it all random? I keep my fingers crossed for you that the other days will be better.

I suspect the candy-color thing is just a function of you not being accustomed to the increased opacity of the medium. Once you've done some more experimenting with it, you'll probably get used to how much it needs toning down if you want to make it more subtle. (I was going to look for some examples from my work, but I realize I *like* the candy color part! *laugh* Most of my work is really saturated. But when I do de-saturated things, I just use a lot of browns and pretty grays, like Payne's. Maybe this could be an excuse for you to buy more colors? My gouache manufacturer has 35, and it's probably one of the smaller companies.
