Not much progress - sitting is painful, since I managed to slip on our grimy (wooden) terrace today and fell squarely onto my back. Must have looked pretty Tom&Jerry. (Hubby, last week: "The terrace is really slippery. We ought to clean it sometime." Me, last week: "Yeah... sometime. After all this rain.")
For the figures, I've tried something I haven't done in about fifteen years: Foregoing contrast. I've had it ingrained into me from my years at comics and concept art forums that every pic needs contrast, and strong contrast. So ingrained that it has resulted in a lot of pieces that just popped too much, though I could never put a finger on it. I did find myself loving softer illustrations without strong contrast, and finally identified that softer contrast as a major factor in my liking them.
A year ago, I would have clothed them both in dark blue. Today, I'll see whether grey isn't the better choice. I'll add careful, slowly-built contrast to the clothes, but their hair is going to pop enough all of its own.
