Watercoloured sketches

I told you I was getting a ton of art ideas from the Prancing Pony Podcast - here's some of them! I spent the day with my daughter and her friends celebrating her birthday (very late; it was in September) at a farm. While the girls played in the hay barn, I sat in the warm party room drinking tea and drawing. Definitely a good way to do birthdays.

The first image is Maedhros giving the horses to Fingolfin in atonement for the desertion in Araman. (Incidentally, has anyone ever noticed what an absolute cluster of Romanic words there is in that passage? We have assuage, atonement, and desertion in that small paragraph. I vividly remember reading the Silmarillion for the first time in English and having to look up all of these, and feeling like an utter idiot because I couldn't even deduce the first two from Latin.)

Also, I promise I'll come up with a better title than "A Gift Horse" if I finish this. XD

Then there's one that will need a bit more work - Tuor exiting Vinyamar and being greeted by the swans. Right now, his stance and expression is a bit too "wtf swans", so that will definitely have to change. My main objective here was to make the swans look graceful and arrange them in a way that they draw you towards him.

In my headcanon, it was Maedhros' own horse - but Rochallor was descended from him. That's why I draw Rochallor as a dapple grey, just like the ones Maedhros always rides.

I can't believe I missed this - and that nobody picked it up before now! Why did I think this was it left hand?

Jenny Dolfen

Is that Mae's right hand or is it a mirror image? ;-)

"A Gift Horse" is a great title though because if that's Rochallor, the horse on which Fingolfin (much later) rides out to challenge Morgoth to single combat, doesn't it ultimately lead to his death? I love Tuor's "WTF swans" expression. Very lifelike. Who wouldn't look like that when suddenly crowded by swans? Those birds are HUGE!

Such promising sketches! Yes, I love this passage about our dear Noldorin lords ; so meaningful and revealing regarding the characterization of Maedhros! And that seems to be a very good way to celebrate birthdays ! Hope your daughter enjoyed the day as well :)

Lovely! Although "wtf swans" seems like a reasonable response to that many swans coming at you. (Which is not to say that the swans are not lovely and graceful so much as that swans are sizable and I would run the other way if that many of them came toward me.)

Lisa Gerard

They both look like they're be lovely! That horse is gorgeous. You're very good at horses.
