Nienna

So much going on right now. Things are starting to look pretty alarming here in Europe - we still don't have a lockdown here in my area, though other German regions have already implemented things much like them. My husband actually was paid in toilet paper today - yes, half in jest, but only half. We were certainly grateful for it!

My family is still fine, but I'm a little worried about my parents. My mother lives in Spain for most of the year, and she was in Spain when the lockdown came. My father is in northern Germany. Travelling is impossible, and I can only pray that nothing happens to either of them - they're both doing okay and are halfway cheerful (dad being his stubborn old self), but it's disconcerting to know that, if anything happened to them, I couldn't travel.

The news are full of people doing uplifting things and being wonderful to one another. Not in my village. I never felt that the people living here - a lot of older folks - were particularly polite, but now, they feel downright hostile. Even "Good Morning" is going out of fashion. I went running this morning - for the first time in years - and that, finally, did lift my spirits enough to give me some inspiration to draw. Nienna felt fitting.

I never "got" Nienna when I was younger. (Younger including up to the age of forty-two.) It took 2018 for me to understand the power of compassion and wisdom through grief and suffering. When I was younger, I understood sadness to be something absolute, a condition you either had or didn't. I didn't, and thought I was on the "right side" of things because of it, as if sadness, if it happened, was something eternal, unmoving and unchanging. It's only now that I can appreciate the incredible transformative power that Nienna holds.

My daughter once again modelled for her. It's wonderful and hilarious that I ask her to model a pose, and she immediately puts on her most faraway expression of  Elven longing while I'm still fiddling with the camera!

Thanks! :) Yes, I finally felt I "got" her.

This Nienna truly captures what she stands for! Very poignant.

Our next door neighbour is an elderly lady, who is really nice, and we've already offered help (and so has she). My parents have lots of friends and can do their shopping alone without problems, but what I'm worried about is if one of them gets sick (in whatever way), as travelling to Spain is no longer possible, and hospitals no longer allow visitors...

Oh of course!

Jenny Dolfen

She is! ^^

They're in my sketchbook, so no selling :) But there'll be prints at some point!

Jenny Dolfen

Not really, no! None of my kids has shown much interest in art at all, sadly.

Posting a second message, since patreon seems to have a habit of eating my long and edited messages. We're doing fine here, but we've had a very rough week, mother dear with ill with heart rhythm issues that are (in this case) fairly innocent, but still take their toll. During these time, the whole country went crazy with stocking up and selling out stores: bread, pasta, toilet paper, milk, fresh vegetables and potato ships so we had a very hard time getting the groceries done (and no social initiative to do the groceries in sight). We're both risk patients (mother dear because of her age, me for having chronic airway issues) so we're staying at home as much as possible. At least, after last week, we could do with some peace and quiet...(For now, we do have a major housecleaning planned for next week). Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe!

I can understand that's a scary situation with your parents. Do they have someone to look after them if need comes? Hooray for more toilet paper! The situation with your neighbours sounds all too familiar. There's little care sympathy for each other from the neighbours here as well, but at least people aren't avoiding each other no more than they usually do (as in: if mother dear sits before the window, it'll take about 5 minutes before the neighbours on the other side of the street close the curtains). Can't withhold you this gem either: said neighbour told my mother this very morning how easy she could take public transport to go the garden centre (about an hour journey with two different busses. While all elderly people have been advised not to use public transport in these times. Not to mention she's been twice this week at least (Somehow, garden centre's are still open, somehow everyone seems to think this is the perfect place to go these days...)

Oh dear, I hope you and your loved ones will be ok (sending lots of positive vibes)! This Nienna is gorgeous, really, everything in this piece is absolutely beautiful (and I think your daughter did a great job with the pose!) ! Nienna has always been one of my personal favourite, but yeah, I completely see what you mean ; the power of compassion through grief and sadness, though a wonderful message, isn't easy to catch. Please, be careful and keep on with the good spirits!

I've seen your daughter's elven acting and it's very good. Beautiful painting!

My computer didn't want to cooperate with me in the above deleted message. What I said was, such a sweet and lovely picture of Nienna. And your daughter sounds like a lot of fun!!

Vivienne E Collins

I love Nienna, though I admit it took years for me to grow into understanding her as well.

Gwendolyn

Very lovely Nienna. I hope you can keep finding little (and not so little) moments of light & joy.

Jennifer Tifft

This piece is beautiful. Are you selling these or planning prints?

Katy

Your daughter is a trooper. Is she painting yet?
