Colour swatches fail

When you're decided to get into gouache again, and make yourself a great little palette, and dutifully do colour swatches...

... only to remember that gouache is a "what you see is what you get" medium so you don't need colour swatches. XD

Yes, I want to try it again... I came across a class from Justin Donaldson recently, starting in April, and I've signed up for monitoring it. I find that spending money on something I want to learn is the only way to make me learn. .Spending money on art materials doesn't work. I'm an art material hoarder, so I'll happily put them into my art closet (the one now screaming "tidy me all the way to the bottom!") and never use them. I just threw away a batch of Reeves gouache paints - they stank. O_o

Gouache is water-based, so it always reactivates when wetted. But I've already found that having dry cakes of gouache is not ideal for painting larger, opaque areas, because you can't get large amounts of undiluted gouache from the palette. I'm learning. ;)

Silly question: isn't the gouache drying up on the palette? I always thought you had to put only what you would use on the palette.

Wow! That's never happened with my honey-based watercolour paints (though maybe I use them up too fast). I always thought honey couldn't go bad. Maybe it's something else in them that goes bad, and the rancid bakery is just collateral damage.

My particular brand of gouache uses honey as a binder, and when they go off they smell like a rancid bakery. >.>
