Most people were expecting Philadelphia to have blown the doors off Saprissa because that’s exactly what Philadelphia did when they played against each other in this tournament three years ago. This was a rematch of the 2021 first round. Philadelphia had a beat down of epic proportions, and if memory serves me correct it wasn’t even a game by the second leg. Philadelphia continued to pour it on in the second leg. The change from three years ago has been remarkable. I don’t want to keep repeating myself and sounding like a broken record but the investment that concacaf is putting in central America and the Caribbean after just one year has yielded Incredible results. This tournament was never competitive at any point really in the last decade outside of MLS and Liga MX. To revive the tournament and bring interest back the governing body of the region Created regional cups North American leagues cups/central American leagues cups/Caribbean leagues cup as well as invested and is sending parachute payments to smaller countries. It’s definitely bringing the tournament back to life. I should clarify the North American leagues cup is MLS versus Liga MX and all 47 clubs between the two leagues participate. The central American leagues cup and the Caribbean leagues cup are not open to every team in every league. You qualify for them based off of league positioning, and then use those to qualify for champions cup.
