Squid Games Episode 7

Comments

One of the VIP actors said in an interview that when they got the job, they obviously had no idea it'd become this big thing, so he felt he had to defend himself from criticism (everyone thought they were the worst part of the show). He said they received scripts that read like Google Translate dialogue and asked if they could change their lines to make them more natural, but the director refused. So that's how it came out, probably written in Korean and then translated simply.

i like to believe that the vips are truly an international group, with not many native english speakers, hence the weird way they speak. i also believe that they are goofy on purpose. rich, powerful people often think very highly of themselves, like they're the coolest, smartest, the best, but often they're just really dumb and kinda primitive almost. but yeah, it could have been presented in a more subtle way

I wonder if anybody else noticed that 322 was the funny whiny manager in "marriage proposal"

That husband-wife duo must've had a plan. Because when the players decide to stop playing, a part of the money gets sent to last living relatives of deceased. In their case, it would be the husband. So if they actually ended the games the husband would still get some money. Not the whole pot, but a bit.

just because they all have different backgrounds and abilities doesnt mean it’s unfair. in our world maybe, but the definition of fairness in this setting is that everyone has an equal oppotunity and information given regardless of their gender, background, etc. that’s why the women had to compete against men in tug of war. according to your logic, in tug of war, the stronger ones shouldve been given a disadvantage. front man obviously prioritized the VIPs’ entertainment over this bullshit fairness thing that they made up, but realistically, complete fairness doesnt really exist.

Just a reminder: When the detective was looking through the files in the last episode (ep 6) he saw that his brother had won several years ago. However, when he went to look up his brother’s individual file, it had been removed. His brother’s number/file was the only one missing from that year of the games.

I think this game was based off of hopscotch. A twisted version of hopscotch.

Ahjusshi_Brown

it suppose to be fair with 50 50 chance u cant know how to play when others cant.... it is fair to nerf him to be liek the others c: its not cheating

Thinkace

wheres vincenzo?

Alyss

So the glassmaker was the middle brother from the 3brothers ep of attorney woo I mentioned. And the math teacher was the reporter

Dancemish

not really a nitpick ! A lot of us thought that would actually interesting to see what would happen in this scenario.. what a shame :/

Leenseoh

they should have hired better english speaking actors, their parts were so cringe😭

nylecoj

I think most Kdramas hire really bad “English speaking” actors. That’s why it’s always so cringe or not believable whenever they have these actors speak in English in kdramas. I agree, it’s unnatural and honestly ruins a lot of kdrama scenes for me, including this episode which could have been great without their theatrical acting

BTW 2 episodes left. This series has 9 episodes instead of the usual 8. More episodes to suffer through woohoo 😭

I have enjoyed these weekly reactions so much! I am always also on the edge of my seat. Kind of sad next week is the last episode. I think a second season is in the works though.

I think the English sounds unnatural partly because it was written by a Korean person. So unless he had lots of years living in an English-speaking environment, it may be hard to write natural and conversational English as you're used to. You can see that every line of the VIPs and even the Front Man is too proper and complete. Also I doubt that the actors who play the VIPs are actually good and experienced actors so that may be why they seem exaggerated and a little robotic even. I think it's a pretty common issue in Korean film and TV that the foreign actors are a little poorly selected since they don't usually matter that much. That's just my opinion tho!

The only other time I have ever felt this way watching something was the first time I watched the hunger games. The scariest thing for me is that this could actually happen one day.

One thing I always found really strange about this game is that every single time someone is pushed the glass happens to be the normal and not the reinforced. Always wondered about a scenario where someone is pushed onto reinforced glass and the awkwardness and fear of standing up and seeing the person who just tried to kill you behind you. Just a very mild nitpick on my end.

It’s not just squid game but in a lot of the Kdramas I’ve watched the English dialogue and western characters feel kind of awkward. I guess it’s because it’s written by Koreans who aren’t fluent and I think sometimes it’s originally written in Korean and then translated to English which could add to making it sound a little off

Niko

Thank you guys so much for this one. Hope Lachlan is feeling much better. Also, Steph is looking so pretty!

Sjfyy_
