Re:Zero S2 Episodes 13 And 14

Thanks for the spoiler bro

Tibbers

The fact that you predicted both the Felt theory AND Satella and the Witch of Envy being seperate entities is mind boggling. How are you so intuitive?

Marvin Zühlke

I just noticed that Rosswall and Echidna are dark reflections of Subaru;s parents, Roswall wants Subaru to be like him, while Kenichi is already proud of Subaru and Equidna wants Subaru to depend on her (like helicopter mom) while Naoko lets him go at his own pace and even gives him "lessons" in weird non direct ways

Hombredecultura

Seeing Otto show up when Subaru hits rock bottom and the ending theme music starts playing is the fucking best

I find the dynamic between the Witch of Envy/Satella and Subaru so interesting. I can't wait for you guys to learn more and start theory crafting because I think the theories between those two (or three) are some of the most interesting. The most important thing to take away from what Satella said to Subaru is that Subaru supposedly 'saved' her. Also, if Subaru was given Return by Death the instant he was transported to the Re: Zero world, could that mean Satella is responsible for isekai'ing him? It's strange because the way the Witch of Envy/Satella speaks about Subaru, you'd think they've had some sort of past relationship... I also don't subscribe to the belief that Emilia is the Witch of Envy/Satella because I think that'd be a little too on the nose.

WRam

this is definitely a spoiler lmao

Keshav Krishnakumar

lol. The bad part isn’t that you said it’s not a spoiler. I even believe you thought it probably wasn’t. The bad part is that it is a spoiler, so why wouldn’t you just remove it?

Rockycitygirl

100% spoilers lmfao, light novels and the actual anime don't follow the same path of things.. just think a little please

Dylan French

How is that not a spoiler? Especially number 1. Are you telling me the show doesn’t explore further whether they are the same or not in the future of the series? Also, number 2: How can it not be a spoiler to know that a character is also an isekai in a show that so far only had the mainchar as isekai? Is that just me? Just because this information is "missing" and you consumed the story in a different way (manga/novel i guess ?) doesn’t mean it can’t be a spoiler for this style of storytelling.

Confused and enthused, that's the spirit of the show

Renegade

The next two episodes are peak, I honestly think they are the best two episodes of this season easy imo.

Devilmaycry- Joker

The best thing about guessing the Emilia-Satella connection is there's no spoilers at all because the novels are like 5 arcs ahead and we still know nothing lol. Personally I don't see any way that she is straight up Satella since the whole plan with the witch cult was to put Satella's soul in her body. I think they really just happen to be pretty much identical. The only way for it to actually be her is if Satella is Emilia from the future who time traveled back 400 years and that would be a pretty lame reveal IMO.

The self hate for Subaru mainly comes from his inability to save Rem. You see him start to build himself up and it was all literally thanks to Rems words spurring him on and made him love her. So, the losing her right away like that right after saving Emilia. Sent him right back into a self hate spiral that only starts to get resolved again by Otto. Someone willing to listen. To like you for you and willing to believe you no matter what.

Wiznoot123

Episode 13 specifically may be the lowest low the series brought me particularly (not necessarily Subaru. Why? Because the anime decided to take a long hiatus on this episode so all I had to go off of for months was learning Roswell orchestrated everything and Otto became a total G.

Moroni W

32:05 Such a great breakdown of Subaru's character development in relation to Return By Death!

Roswall wouldnt feel anything about Rem since her memory was erased by Greed. That said, Im betting he knows of her since he has a Tome of Wisdom which should still have her in the past (assuming Gluttony cant overwrite Greed, especially since one is from an archbishop and the other is from the source, i think) so even if he knows of her, he wouldnt feel anything since he would have no personal interactions with her in his memory! Poor Rem T~T

One thing I know for a loose fact (my other post was all theories) from the things I learned in my creative writing classes and being a writer myself, there is a style of writing where the goal is to manipulate the audience into believing the wrong thing, so by the end of the story, the audience (hopefully) comes to a revelation that comes from deep within and something they can take to heart. I KNOW this is that kind of story. I see all the mechanics and it's so fantastically done you don't even realize what's happening the first time. Without getting spoilery, I will point out what the mechanics of the story have actually done so far. The set up of the story begins already showing us a neutral, ignorant, selfish, hopeless character. They make us believe we are going to experience an isekai type storyline, they feed us the general perception of "satella the big bad witch who is evil." The first section of the story puts all it's effort into teaching us and brainwashing us into these are the people we trust, these aren't the people we trust, witch is bad, cult is one big bad organization (and only one person in one sentence mentions "the dragon" because Roswaal hates and wants to kill this dragon, yet nobody says anything about the dragon?) until the witch's will. Subaru has a super power RBD that can fix any problem. They make us get to a point where we even root for Subaru to die to fix everyone's fates to our ideal fate, feeding into Subaru's toxic belief of "nobody likes me. I'm only good for dying. As long as I keep dying, I can save my loved ones" and then to teach us a lesson about relying on RBD the way Subaru does, they make it so RBD screws him over because Rem got deleted and it got stuck that way. This taught us "see? You can't rely on RBD because you don't know where the locking point will be" but instead of Subaru learning this lesson, he externalizes it. "I blame Satella for this, I blame RBD" and even going so far as to blame anyone who tries to save him, reducing his worth as someone who deserves to be saved because if he's saved, others die (even though we don't know if those characters can be saved depending on where and when things happen now, and that's what the second trial covered was that how do you know that sacrificing yourself is actually better for these people? They might die anyway, or they'll be horrified you died. Keep in mind, Japanese media love to interject Japanese philosophy so everything connects to a real life problem) the show then begins to reveal that Subaru even without this power, had an issue with this. He felt like since he wasn't worth anything, it was better if he wasn't around and they start to show us the impact that his toxic beliefs about himself were the real driving force behind his decision making. Rem was the shows way of taking us out of his headspace to say "no no no, you are loved for all these reasons. You don't need to be worth something to matter to someone." A very important lesson that I think Subaru completely missed the point of for the time being lol. Anyway, instead of going point by point from here, I'll just say that the rest of the show is trying to get the audience and Subaru to realize that him using RBD too much for the chance of saving others, but never to consider saving himself as well, and the fact he doesn't even try to rely on others because he thinks "only I can fix this" which Emilia even yelled at him for, is absurd. The fact we root for the character we like, to die is absurd. So undoing everything they trained us to think in order to be in-line with Subaru's POV is AMAZING writing! I have never been manipulated through something like this so well except for maybe one book where the whole thing ended up a lie and the latest expansion of my game FFXIV lol. It's brilliant. Now they are using those same mechanics as they open up the doors to the lore, introducing us to the witches. They are wild, but for eg. I don't think Echidna REALLY wanted Subaru to take that deal. She was curious if he would and she would've cashed in, but she was pleased when he said no. She knew before he was the type to say "Oh, take the easy way out of a problem to get the guaranteed ending I want and all I have to do is suffer and die for everyone? Sign me up" early Subaru 100% would've taken that deal! But I think she wanted him to be better. To realize that he matters and that accepting sketchy help for an easy way out at the risk of your sanity and well-being is the stupidest thing someone can do and that is something that happens in rl too. Remember, she has some control over whether the other witches can show up or not, and each witch represents aspect of humanity so of course she knew that some of them were going to disagree with her deal and stop him. It was all a test and a lesson and the one he feared and blamed the most, come to find out, just wants him to value his life more and to love himself more. (They tricked us in the Japanese. Because she never finished her sentence, it sounded like "I love you" and "Love me" but it's possible the entire time she was telling him to love himself) so ya, the first part of the show wasn't establishing how Subaru should problem solve and "woo, let's change that to make it harder" no, it wasn't about Subaru at all. It was setting US up to think and feel a certain way to be on level with Subaru, and after achieving that, they are now saying "ok so here's a problem that can't be solved alone, and RBD isn't going to help" and then they give us the msg of "value yourself more instead of jumping in front of every train to maybe save others" and now they are opening the path to "this is what we made you think, but this is the reality" gahhh so good!

Missing context from the books Roswall didn't promise that he could thaw the elves in the books he brought up how the royal family has access to the divine dragon Volcanicas blood which can heal anything so if she became ruler she could use the dragons blood to heal them The reason why Subaru can still access the trial grounds is cause the trial grounds attack you using your own gate (your own magic) so for someone as weak as Subaru while unpleasant it's possible for Roswall ... Well there's a reason he's covered in bandages

Saul Harrison-coupe

Practically Author vs Subaru 😂😂

Garkham

Also for the parts with Echinda and Roswal which in my first watch was way too confusing with all the cryptic but not so cryptic bs. But from my understanding Roswal wants Subaru to use RBD, which btw Roswal doesn’t even really know the requirement for Subaru to loop, in a way that meets his goal and sacrifices anything else other than that goal. The same thing Echidnas contract was saying, to reach the future Subaru desires with sacrifices (such as rem) along the way. And for Roswal, as he stated in previous episodes, a way for Subaru to become more like him. From my understanding…

Garkham

5:18 in where Wes is saying he agrees with Subaru to a point "if you have this power, you should sacrifice yourself" I disagree. Even before he had this power, he was making himself suffer because of the same mindset. He is the type that superpower or no, he will beat himself up and risk himself because he believes he's not worth protecting, but his friends are. And I very much dislike the "burden of responsibility" mindset. "Well because I have this talent, knowledge whatever, I NEED to sacrifice my mental, physical and emotional health for others to be happy and to help others" It sounds selfish I guess, but after being a whimpering dog my whole life, bending over and breaking everything about me to try and fit a certain standard because I was born "special" I have been slowly learning that that's not fair to you. That lacks self respect and nobody should be expected to abandon themselves because they think other people are more worthy than them and just because you have the ability to do something, it shouldn't be expected to suffer through because of it, even if that expectation was placed on yourself. That's what the witches were saying. "Rely on your friends, value yourself more, instead of throwing your body at the problem, work with the people around you to solve problems because you're not alone. Ask for help" I think there was a context with Echidna too that's like "If you don't seek help from others and try to do everything alone, damaging yourself, then predatory people will seek you out and use your need for support to get you to agree to things you shouldn't agree to" From what I recall, the other witches didn't actually do harm (at least not directly and even Gluttony you could argue she did what Christian God does. Make creatures that could feed people, but made it so they could defend themselves so they wouldn't only be preyed upon) like they were essentially forces of nature who kept balance in the world, but then Satella at them all. We are also seeing through the lens of the characters, so I fully believe that the witches are at the very least neutral chaotic grey characters, but some of them did really good things, didn't they? And seeing them in this clip (which gave me therapy lol) I can't help but think we have an untrustworthy narrator and I am still riding my horse into the sunset with the believe that Subaru somehow in some timeline becomes the priest or whatever of Pride to fight this dragon, and he had Satella give him the RBD so he could go back and save everyone but the condition was he wouldn't remember any of it. I am staying alone on this hill in the freezing cold until the series is over or someone convinces me otherwise with a well-formed thesis 😂

Wednesday are some of my fav being Steins Gate and Rezero. I think you guys understood after seeing the whole interaction of the tea party. Subaru throughout this arc and last season (to some extent), has been using RBD as a tool. With the mindset that he can “redo” everything, he would commit su*cide and needlessly find ways to die if things went wrong. Naturally that’s pretty logical cause if you can redo it to save others why not. But wanting to k*s is one of the furthest thing from loving yourself (a very good way the author, I believe, tried to interpret). So this story is not only about Subaru trying to help achieve Emilia’s goal of becoming the selected candidate , which is the future echidna mentions, but also a way for Subaru to find ways he can be of use to other w/o his death.

Garkham

Literally two seconds before you guys said it, I thought the same, lol. otto = dragon = confirmed!

Rockycitygirl

0:53 I'm very curious about what you think about what Minvera said there after watching the conclusion of the witches tea party scene. Because I agree with her. Though she's not exactly a wordsmith, haha, but I like her hot headedness [Edit 36:38] Well, didn't have to wait for too long 😂 Agreed, she's a sweetie... I hope? Sorry, you know the author keeps messing with us 😅 15:45 Ouch, Subaru. I don't think they're monsters. Yes they have screw loose, but I do genuinely believe that they want to help him, perhaps even do good in the word. Well, in their own twisted ways like Gluttony with her 'solving world hunger' solution... unless author is fooling me too yet again, then I take everything back and state the opposite. 17:27 My theory is that the witches cult probably never even met the witches themselves, and the "gospels" is just the weird stuff they just made up in their own mind after going insane from abusing their power. Or they were insane from the start and the gospel is just an excuse. 36:47 I love that the more revelations you've gotten, the wilder the speculations become 🤣But agreed, Otto truly is the best boy of this arc, just like Rem was in the last.

Peter Butchens

Yeah, I should've also added that I meant that the goal of rubbing it in was to make him realize how much he hates himself, and that he shouldn't hate himself that much. He lived his life in self-loathing, and so by giving him the chance to end it all without actually ending anything, allowing him to do it over and over, eventually he would start choosing himself over others. There was even a time when he did that. When he's at his lowest. When he wanted to run away with Rem and leave it all behind for his own salvation. I bet Satella was really happy then, only to start crying again when he lunged head-first into danger... No wonder she doesn't like Rem, who essentially told him that "loving yourself doesn't suit you." At least from Satella's perspective.

Iriza

As @Edgy Flame mentioned, Satella and The Witch of Envy are two seperate personalities. They both love Subaru, the witch of envy's love just comes out in the form of possessive obsession. The WoE wants Subaru for herself. The Return by Death was for Subaru only, so he can't tell anyone about it or he will be punished. Satella is the pure innocent love who wants the best for him, actively request he relies on others.

Reuben Filimaua

I disagree. I think its as simple as she said it herself. She just doesn't want him to die, because she loves him and wants nothing but for him to be okay. Thematically, she is standing before Subaru personifying the feelings of all the people around him. They care about him and want to support him, so it hurts to see him "heroically" sacrifice himself to a brutal ending. I bet they're all thinking "open up and let us help you damn it! Don't suffer alone." Everything else you said I agree with. Subaru's actions reveal nothing but his self loathing and a complete lack of value. He does care about the others.. but the way he so quickly resorts to dying to restart over again is concerning. Its like the author is trying to tell us and Subaru to stop treating your life as something worthless, like a tool for a video game. Stop self harming and rationalizing it as something better than it actually is.

Reuben Filimaua

Echidna is the only witch that hates BOTH Satella AND The Witch of Envy

Papi Martini 🍸

About the Satella stuff, there's some cut content from the novels, so that whole interaction is a little confusing. But Satella had the envy witch factor forced on her, and it drove her insane, and she developed a split personality, which is the Witch of Envy. All the other witches hate the witch of envy, and she's the crazy, delirious one who was muttering I love you over and over again to Subaru. Despite that, though, it is Satella who did the bad things. Also, both personalities love Subaru. Roswaal not only did that, but he's also the one who hired Elsa way back in arc one to steal the insignia, in case you all forgot about that little detail. So he's been planning this for a while, of course, all in accordance with his tome of wisdom.

Edgy Flame

Wes: Puck was the strongest we've seen in this show Reinhard: Am I a joke to you. 😂😂

Reuben Filimaua

Been killing it with the discussions surrounding Roswaal. He's definitely the biggest mystery here. So from what can be understood he wants Subaru to focus all his efforts only on Emilia. At the same time, he's created this situation that causes Emilia to be cornered and isolated to the point she can ONLY rely on Subaru's emotional support to hold on. Somehow all this, including backing Emilia as a candidate for the Royal Selection is necessary for whatever his one goal and desire is. I think its crazy Roswaal is so insane he doesn't have Return by Death but trusts in Subaru completely to eventually reach the point he wants him to be at. Roswaal is essentially following a cheat code book (the Tome of Wisdom) that shows him what specific choices are needed to be taken that will lead him to the desired conclusion he wants, and using Subaru as his biggest pawn with the Return by Death (unlimited tries) to execute it.

Reuben Filimaua

the witches are all fundementally good people with good intentions, who end up doing the wrong thing due to their naiveness (except for echidna i guess) theyre basically somewhere between chaotic good and chaotic neutral

jons

I believe Satella gave Subaru the ability to return by death as a way to rub in the fact that he hates himself. He isn't forced to use it, but he does. During the trial when Subaru met his parents, his mom asked Subaru as a joke, "If you had to choose between mayonnaise and the world, what would you choose?" And Subaru replied that anyone that chooses mayonnaise doesn't like mayonnaise, they just hate the world. I believe this was hinting at that Subaru isn't dying over and over again because he likes others, but rather because he hates himself. It's one thing to sacrifice yourself for those you love, one or twice, but as many times as he has? I mean, aside from the fact that Subaru made it very well known that he hates himself, I'd say dying that many times for others speaks more about how much he hates himself, as opposed to how much he loves others. Someone that truly loved themselves a normal amount wouldn't be able to do that.

Iriza

i dont know if u understood this, but satella is actually a good person. she is genuinely trying to help subaru and the advice she gives him is extremely good advice
