I’m with Wes the music is ominous, we’re watching these absolute freaks of nature determined to do nothing but gain power

It's not even just about being "scared" - though that's definitely a factor. It's more about regional culture and, mostly, about money. As soon as media becomes too brutal or sexualized, it loses a big portion of its potential audience. That's why, for example, Marvel movies are typically rated PG-12 or even lower. Kids and teens love superheroes, but if the content were too brutal, they wouldn't be allowed to watch it. That would instantly cut off a huge chunk of customers. Sure, 18+ content can work, as Deadpool proved, but taking that kind of risk is a big gamble for studios, so they usually avoid it. When I first started watching anime, it was just randomly on TV. Back then, it was treated as "kids' shows" or "cartoons," so everything was heavily censored and changed. Smoking, weapons, blood - they were all removed or censored. Nobody was even allowed to say "death" or "kill." Everything was toned down a lot for afternoon TV. The shows were usually already censored for Japanese TV and then completely destroyed for Western TV. If it's not made for kids, don't try to sell it to kids, it's that simple. That said, I also think the idea of just "not giving a fuck" is wrong. Just because something is fiction doesn't mean everyone should have access to everything - especially nowadays, when animation and graphics are becoming more and more realistic. I'm all for regulating content appropriately, it just shouldn't swing to either extreme.

Fave hisoka moment next ep 💜

Chels

Oh, “nice guy Hisoka” list addition time! He stuck out his arm to willfully let Kastro cut it off. Practically Gave it to him. Does that count? Probably not, but very Hisoka-like nonetheless.

The Anime Dude

For me, the most ridiculous anime censorship was Hokutô no Ken, with scenes where they painted the characters' blood white to make it less gory, and it ended up making it look like the characters were bleeding either sweat or sperm.

Didier

In the manga, Hisoka's arm was bleeding. They just censored it in this adaptation because they were not allowed to show too much blood at the hour at which the anime was airing in Japan. There is this saying that Americans love violence in their medias but hate visual representations of sexuality/nudity, and Japaneses love sexual/nude things but hate gore. It's the reason why many gory American videogames like Dead Space get either banned or censored in Japan, and Japanese ero games often get banned or censored on American platforms like Steam (On it, Japanese developers have to sell censored versions officially and then offer a free patch on their websites to uncensor it). Basically Japaneses are scared of seeing fictional characters shitting out their internal organs and Americans are scared of seeing fictional underaged characters getting naked (in that regard, some American reactions to Dandadan and Chainsaw Man were pretty cringe). Meanwhile in some European countries, nobody gives a fuck about either because, at the end of the day, representations of fictional characters are still representations of something that isn't real.

Didier

Ughhh i need next weeks episodes ASAP !!

Julia Lee

Yeah, I get it. Especially with things you like, you can be the most critical. Obviously, I would prefer no censoring as well, if possible, but that's the harsh reality. ^^

Rockycitygirl

Still my favorite all time favorite anime, so didn’t mean to sound like a hater. Just clarifying, cuz I figure it’s one of those times where the censorship causes a bit of unnecessary confusion as the power system is introduced, especially since… as you said, the censorship isn’t necessarily consistent & is toned down later.

The Anime Dude

That’s the case with almost every anime, though, right? It’s nothing special to HxH, anime across the board gets changed and censored to match the demographic, TV-channel, or broadcast time. It’s something you have to accept to some degree as an anime watcher, and I think HxH did a good job, to be honest. Also, the censoring gets toned down a lot starting with the next arc.

Rockycitygirl

Remember when Hisoka cut off ole boy’s arms at the start of the Hunter exam & there was flowers everywhere? Kinda similar to the sparkles in this here 2nd episode, our boy Hisoka always getting censored. That’s just blood... You know, the thing you expect to come out when a limb is suddenly cut off? 😭 One of my biggest critiques about the anime adaptation is that kind of censorship. They try to make some of his fights a bit less brutal.

The Anime Dude

The "sparkly" effects were just for censorship reasons, Kastro actually did sever Hisoka's arm. As for how he managed to clone himself, just keep watching, it's quite normal for HxH to explain things retrospectively. We’ll learn a lot more about Nen in the upcoming episodes. So far, we only know the very basics, and this whole arc is essentially about learning Nen.

Rockycitygirl

Yes, the composer, Yoshihisa Hirano, wrote both HxH and Death Note osts!

Maya

Kurapika’s teacher isn’t Ging, like the previous comment said. That new ost music sounds a bit angelic but it’s definitely foreboding too, you’ll be hearing it more later! Also there is blood, it’s still being censored right now but it won’t be starting from the next arc. Ahh I’m so excited for your reaction to the next episode and the explanation, there’s still so much to learn about Nen!

Mikki

Just to clarify, Kurapika's teacher is not Gon's dad. Also, Wing has not finished teaching us all about Nen so you will quickly see how this works out

Salahadine Abaine

Hisoka not bleeding out was actually just censorship — he actually was bleeding lol

2 minutes before my lunch break, let’s fucking go
