Yes, it was in the states, in 1992 so I dunno how much laws around that might have changed, but it's such a rare situation to have to be in, it would be so nuanced. At least, until we get better technology so we have more of a choice whether to save them or not. However, states like OH and SC have been prosecuting mothers for miscarriages caused by negligence (ie. Not knowing they were pregnant in risky scenarios, or being in abusive relationships) so that could have been a problem if this happened these days smh. As for your grandma, I'm sorry to hear you also had to experience that. Cases like alzheimers and terminal cancer really are the worst and it makes no sense to make them suffer past a certain point. We should have the right to choose to pass gently with dignity while we know who we are, surrounded by loved ones at our side while we go to sleep. My condolences not just for the loss, but also the kind of loss 🥺💜

It is devastating but makes sense what the tribe in Africa does because otherwise they all die. After seeing my Grandma wither away while suffering I also wish assisted suicide was legal here, at least for the elderly and terminally ill.

2024-11-05 17:29:51 +0000 UTCI forgot to comment this last episode, but that line about the cultures who value kids or adults more brings me back to one of my Anthropology classes that was very tense and controversial to a lot of my classmates, but I sat somewhere in the middle on the issue because of my unique circumstances. We were studying infanticide in low economic societies and I remember my classmates all getting very upset on the topic and even speaking extremely judgemental about those cultures (which is a no-no in Anthropology. We're supposed to set aside our ethnocentrism) Anyway, so one of the cultures, a tribe in Africa somewhere, their infantile survival rate is 5% and resources are so scarce, they would leave a baby for a few days to see if it would be strong enough to survive before wasting the resources on it and one of the women said that they would hear the bell basically every day (the bell is the sign the baby died) so they became completely desensitized to babies dying. They wouldn't name their babies for months just in case and this was just their way of life, but everyone viciously criticized these women, unknowingly criticizing my family and so when I said something, I ended up having to speak to the entire class about my perspective because my mom had to commit infanticide of my brother. He was too weak, born without eyes and fingers and I had to explain to my classmates that it is sometimes a mercy to let the babies die, because they would suffer more than the adults. So that is why some cultures value adults more, because the children are just helpless mouths to feed when they don't have the ability to care for every child born, and many would end up suffering their whole lives. Starving, getting diseases, having to be sold off in a marriage to an adult for a chance at life, things like that, and it comes down to where our resources are better spent. But given the response I seen from my class, I think America is the type of culture to at least try and put the kids first. Messy thought process, but that's what came to mind for me when they said that 😅 Oh and for context, my mom didn't just like.. kill my brother lol it was done in the hospital and they left him out of the respirator and didn't feed him, letting him pass naturally because there are laws against euthanasia on humans in hospitals. Something I actively fight against because that has impacted my family 2 different ways now. My brother had to die slowly, and my grandpa who was terminal and horribly depressed from basically suffering old age, he killed himself horrifically instead of in the comfort of a hospital surrounded by family. So ya, I spread awareness where I can that we need Physician assisted suicide for cases like these.

There’s both formal and informal speech, something you don’t see in Western culture. There will always be a social barrier if there’s even a 1 year age gap. You’re only considered “friends,” and therefore able to use informal speech, if you’re born in the same year.
