Haikyu S4 Episode 18

😂 another fun little info dump, the reason they wouldn't likely give Kenma a piggyback ride is because in Japan (particularly manga, anime and dramas) piggyback rides are seen as intimate and romantic, so at least for Kenma, it might be demeaning for him potentially. Or it could also be demeaning in the "short people complex" kinda way lol because I'm 5 ft and 85 lbs in HS, my acquaintances were constantly picking me up, man-handling me, playing with me like I was a doll (making me dance, moving my arms and such) and let me tell you, nothing could ever piss me off more 😅 so I would rather walk 50 miles having to crawl and hobble than to let someone carry me lol so I feel like Kenma might be the same way with his stubborn streak.. actually that would be so funny. Now I want a scene of Kuro picking Kenma up and Kenma getting mad about it 😂

It's probably me just overthinking this.. actually this is definitely my overthinking lol but oh well, I'll share anyway. So the emphasis on "guts" after a while started to get confusing for me. For us, we think of guts as our core. Having a strong core and bracing ourselves is how we think of preparing ourselves for difficulty, but in Japan, it would be even more vague than "guts" because 根性 (kounjo) is more ambiguous. There is no physical thing they can tie it to because it basically means willpower, spirit, grit, so I think that's why Kenma has that moment of "what is guts?" Or rather "what is grit/willpower?" Which as someone with ADHD and autism, I had to think about the same thing at one point lol interestingly, I learned from psychology that willpower isn't something you can actually muster. It's built by doing the thing and having confidence develop while you do it either by getting better at it, or feeling more accomplished, realizing the thing is easier than you felt like it'd be. So Kenma isn't even aware that he's building "guts" the more he competes because it's something that can only happen from the experience of successfully getting better at it over time. Dunno why, but this is so cool to me 😂 such good writing, but I'm not entirely sure the mangaka was purposely writing it this way because it's usually such an instinct driven concept. Anyway, very interesting and while it's such a Tora thing to use the word "guts" I kind of wish Kenma had turned it into "willpower" or another vague, ambiguous concept in the translation so it would be easier to understand why he's having an existential crisis over "guts" lol
