Vinland Saga S2 Episode 19

Exactly, even the proudest warriors (Samurai) prefered bow to fight above katana

Kindyh Bordat

Yeah bows weren't a weapon for weak people. I don't really think it is even now, at least that's not the most sensible weapon if you really lack strength. A spear is probably the best if you're weak or short (so giving daggers to hobbits is also a mistake LOL), you compensate your lack of skill/strength/height as much as possible with better reach. I think that trope about bows appeared because it's also a weapon of precision and subtlety. Maybe the fact that it became the stereotypical weapon for elves is also the reason for this trope (but in the end it's for the same reason).

Nobody was really in the mood for comedic reunions given the state of things on the farm rn lol

Thanks for sharing. Never do it again 🙏

I like the decision not only because it's respectful, but because it adds a lot of weight to the themes of this show. Rampant and senseless violence doesn't just take lives, it takes all these promises of joy. It can ruin a reunion 20 plus years in the making and overshadow a situation that almost seems to promise levity.

I loved that you guys engaged with our conversations at the comments section. Steph clarified a lot of reasons why Ketil’s depiction causes more visceral reactions for me. That said, I think my original point wishing the fandom would glorify Askeladd less and simply appreciate his character still stands. Regardless of whether or not Askeladd assaulted women himself, he is a direct cause of thousands of assaults, slavery, and murder over decades of raiding. I work in the mental health field. A lot of offenders were themselves victims or witnesses of assault. Just because he saw his dad do it doesn’t mean he automatically reviles it. It was the way of the world then, and the way the world still is.

Whammadoodoo

yep.

Calt Being

That's probably what it is implying.

In a weird way I think the violence in this season and episode in general has felt way less glorified. What I mean is that it isn’t necessarily as cool and flashy as Thorfinn cutting through men or Thorkell cutting people apart as he waltzes through a battlefield. It’s almost a hard watch seeing the citizens get killed

I’m pretty sure we already knew that the Iron Fist Ketil thing was a lie. If I remember, he told Arnheid

bizarre☆azar

The US does offer free college for veterans, much like Ketil forgiving debts 😭

Adam Young

I don’t think Askeladd personally took sexual advantage of any women - it would remind him too much of his father.

I really loved your discussions at the beginning about our different reactions to Ketil and Askeladd, especially how our perspectives highlighted their contrasting roles and character arcs.

Villenthessis

Gardar said that he’ll gonna wait her there with the kids. Does that mean that the second kid is already dead? 🥲

Ruslan

Where can I find a thorgil jeez

Yang

Thorgil makes me bricked up ngl

Yang

I've read that the reason why we didn't get the reunion between Thorfinn and Leif is because the author didn't think it would be appropriate considering Arnheid's situation.
