Well if that make you feel better not a lot of those horribly injured people survived back then. Bacterial infections were deadly (no antibiotics or anything) so even if you were treated with care you had to survive the few weeks that followed for example your leg amputation.

And in the previous season, we clearly saw even though Askeladd had no trouble fighting 20 men by himself, but when arrows were involved he was helpless.

Canute seeks a Viking utopia through strength and Thorfinn longs for a land without war and slavery. But humans left to themselves will always spiral into violence and self-destruction. Most of the world thinks violence like Vinland is just fiction of the past. But as we speak, there are 30 million slaves suffering around the world; compare that to the 10 million people sold by Africa to America during 300 years of slave trade, and you realize things have not been getting better. Unless God intervenes and personally ends the cycle, paradise is forever out of reach by human hands. Until then, Eden is a place that can only be reached by human imagination.
