Best episode of the season in my opinion. Doesn't hurt that Wilhelm was already my favorite character, so anything with him has an advantage. It's great to see that Theresia was happy during her life even if it was cut short. It's unfortunate that the rest of the family fell apart after her untimely death. You know, it wasn't technically the white whale that killed her. It's possible she would still be alive today if Pandora wasn't there, huh.

2025-11-05 19:15:26 +0000 UTCI love that the sword not only cuts through her life literally and metaphorically. Also the fact how much aura the sword has and you can also take it as the sword not wanting to kill one of its previous users. This whole episode is so thematically present and beautiful

2025-04-25 22:40:15 +0000 UTCIf Wilhelm said I love you for the first time right before she left to fight the white whale, that would have been a huge flag and she would have died according to the laws of anime

2025-04-05 05:42:41 +0000 UTCWilhelm never said to her that he loved her because he's a very akward man basically and he did say to subaru that there was a time where he didn't talk enough and it caused him so many things to regret

2025-03-22 07:46:25 +0000 UTCI believe it was either said by Tappei himself or somewhere in the LN, but when Wilhelm finally beat Theresia, he reached the pinnacle of swordsmanship for an instant. The blessing of the sword saint creates guiding lines to strike or defend from, but in that moment Wilhelm completely overwhelmed even that system. There were no lines Theresia could see in that moment. Of course, this was mainly due to the heightened ability he received due to his immense love for her and hope for her future in that moment.

2025-03-20 07:36:12 +0000 UTCThe divine protection of the death god only works if the holder is in proximity. Meaning, the wound still heals but once the holder comes into range again, the wound reopens. Which is why Wilhelm was holding his shoulder in the early episodes, he knew before meeting her. The web novel readers got this actually at the beginning of Arc 4 (Season 2), where Wilhelm told Subaru that during the battle of the white whale, his wound inflicted by Theresia opened up again. This part was changed once it got adapted into the light novel. So no worries with the injuries he got here.

2025-03-20 02:26:23 +0000 UTCWith Re:Zero Season 3 ending in episode 16, it would be fantastic if you guys would check out Fate/Zero to replace it. It's a dark and mature show with well-written story and characters, full of philosophical conflicts and clash of ideals. It's also made by studio Ufotable, the same one which created Demon Slayer, so it's guaranteed to have a fantastic animation.

2025-03-20 01:19:11 +0000 UTCThere’s a lot of cut content or things that weren’t explained well in this episode (not a spoiler) 1. The main reason Theresia didn’t want to fight was because of her Divine Protection. She didn’t want to hurt anyone, and wounds caused by her wouldn’t heal. She used to practice swordsmanship with her sibling but stopped after accidentally injuring them. 2. The first time Theresia picked up a sword to fight was to save Wilhelm’s life (S1 EP19). Heinkel’s wife, Luoanna, didn’t die—she’s just afflicted by the Sleeping Beauty disease. 3. Heinkel was a good father and husband until everything fell apart—his wife never woke up, his mom went to fight the White Whale instead of him, his dad left the Astrea family, and his son beated him in sword fight at very young age. 4. Wilhelm just wanted to hear a bit of regret from Reinhard, but Reinhard didn’t show any. He’s basically a hero with no humanity. Because he never received love from his dad or grandfather.

2025-03-20 01:04:24 +0000 UTCThere's something really important I want you all to know about this episode. The author confirmed on today’s Re:Zero Radio Show that Reinhard specifically wanted the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint. That’s why it transferred to him during the White Whale Subjugation because he wished for it, for Heinkel’s sake. Heinkel regretted that Theresia was sent out for the White Whale Subjugation, so Reinhard wanted the Divine Protection because of that. So yeah, I guess Wilhelm is right to blame Reinhard now.

2025-03-20 00:27:24 +0000 UTCI like how surprised/frustrated you guys were learning that Wilheim never said he loves Theresia. Coming from a different culture, I was not surprised by that kind of interactions at all. It feels so normal and expected. "I love you" is just not something that you say. Of course, now influenced by western culture, it has become a much more common thing. But there is still a huge difference in how frequent or "casually" people would say "I love you" in western culture compared to mine. I know you are probably now thinking "but that's just sad", or things like "even if they know it, it is still important to say it". But in a different culture, you just don't think the same way. If anything, we actually think it is weird how western people have to give so much weight to just words, which is just one particular form of expression of affection among many.

2025-03-19 23:48:21 +0000 UTC7:07 Exactly my reaction right now. Goddammit, I was hoping that wouldn't happen after what you said "would be fun" at the end of last episode. 8:26 You know what? I wouldn't have minded if she did that :P I get what Wes meant. 9:22 Oh god it's playing out exactly like Wes said at the end of last episode ;_; 20:48 Ah hell naw, not HER... wait, so it wasn't the white wale?! 23:13 I was as shocked as you guys to find out he never said it. Though my father and I am kind of like that. I never heard him say that either, and I have trouble saying it, too. Still, have to join in with you: FINALLY! But now that that's sorted, it felt like this was over a little too quickly. Maybe I'm just too paranoid with ReZero. 28:40 That's an interesting point. There's gotta be some drawback to that OP power. So maybe it's the tragedy it brings along? Feels more like a coincidence, though. 33:46 Could be the case. That loss, combined with pressure from his position, his father not showing open affection... he probably went into depression and alcoholism (he does look drunk all the time) after and then everything spiralled out of control. To the point where he just resents everything. His situation, his family, past events, and he needs to blame something for how F'd up his life became to keep himself going. And I'd pity that. He's still an, well, what Steph said at 35:33 :P

2025-03-19 22:43:15 +0000 UTCfun fact: this was the first episode without Subaru
Alejandro Ciani
2025-03-19 22:20:56 +0000 UTCHonestly, Subaru’s very existence almost makes it harder for Wilhelm to reconcile with Reinhard because Subaru is all he wants in a grandson and after this Whole fiasco, that’s probably not gonna change.

2025-03-19 22:03:59 +0000 UTCI do sympathise with Heinkel. He's coping with trauma and severe loss. But its so self destructive and still wrong how he treats his own son. Even Wilhelm. I feel the most bad for Reinhard. Once again the author makes such compelling characters from the typical stereotypes. Reinhard would've been the typical OP MC with no flaws and struggles. But with Reinhard, he has family and identity issues. His power is a curse. He is treated as a monster and a weapon, not as a human. Not even by his own family. He has to live up to the expectation of being a hero, nothing more. Reinhard is the person who seemingly has everything but in actuality has nothing. He has all the divine protections in the world, but no one to share it with. Sure he has Felt to protect and Subaru as a friend.. but he has nobody to call family. Knowing how Wilhelm is and how much he struggled and STILL struggles with conveying his feelings openly, I don't think he was that good of a father to Heinkel. But from what we saw in the flashback montage tho Heinkel did look well adjusted and happy. Everything definitely changed when his mother Theresia died.. which I'm sure he harbors so much guilt for. Guilt and shame that is made easy by shifting the blame on his own son as the individual who "stole" her sword saint power. Leaving her helpless and getting her killed. Yet nobody knows about Pandora's existence in all this. A tragedy. Something must've happened to his wife too. With everything crumbling around him and he's powerless to do anything as an average person in a family of special entities.. yeea its no wonder Heinkel is the way he is now. Drowning himself in alcohol and self loathing. Doesn't make it ok. But we can understand how it all went downhill. The question now is.. can he change or be redeemed?

2025-03-19 21:59:34 +0000 UTCI feel bad for you guys for as much as you like their story , they had to cut so much out of this episode that I’m sure you would’ve really enjoyed. The episode was great regardless.

2025-03-19 21:42:15 +0000 UTCAs puck said in the alternate reality. “You are a true hero and a hero is all you can be” For a few side notes. Theresia didn’t want to use her sword because of her divine blessing which makes it so wounds don’t heal. It made every cut really gruesome if I remember correctly Wilhelm apparently achieved peak swordsmanship when he fought Theresia to take her burden off of her

2025-03-19 21:22:54 +0000 UTCReasons why Heinkel is like that is much more than his mother and Reinhardt situation, I don’t recall if they were explain later or it was in side story, either way I won’t spoil anything just know that Heinkel is actually really interesting character also frustrating one as well

2025-03-19 20:58:34 +0000 UTCIt's very common in Japanese culture for Japanese men to struggle to talk about their true emotions and feelings. It's something that apparently I've heard Japanese women like about western men, that they wear their heart on their sleeves lol

2025-03-19 20:58:19 +0000 UTCHeinkel is a very complicated character... As you said , he was cursed to be born "average" in a family of incredible people... And that's only part of why he is like this, but most of why is spoiler territory , even if some part should have been explained already but was cut...Also , there's the fact that Wilhelm , even though he is one of my favourite characters, is a bad father and a bad grandfather... Instead of being with his family after Theresia's death and grieving with them, he threw himself into revenge and ignored his family. Heinkel is also brash, full of wrath and has a huge complex of inferiority...In many ways he's an older Subaru who never got over his issues , and had over tragedies piled on him... Which is funny since the Author said that if Subaru hadn't been the protagonist, then Heinkel would be. The part where you say that you'd watch a full serie on Wilhelm and Theresia is interresting , since there are 2 full Novel Volume dedicated to the Demi-human war and Wilhelm's youth... The demi-human war , as said in this episode was a massive civil war that happened in the kingdom of Lugunica and shaped the current political scene. It happened roughly 50 years before the start of season 1 , and every non full human race allied and tried to take over the country because they were discriminated against, because racism... The rebellion was broken but it was a long and bloody conflict. Because of that, prejudice against "half breeds" ( half-beast like Garfiel or half-Elf like Emilia( even without taking into account the whole Satella situation) ) is still strong in present times. Hence why a lot of demi humans live in secluded or remote places like the Sanctuary or the forest where the Elves lived ( even though those places were established long before this conflict) People who fought in this war are still relevant to current time like Wilhelm or others who have yet to be introduced... Always a pleasure to watch you reactions !

2025-03-19 20:07:59 +0000 UTCMy man Heinkel had to watch his son kill his mother for the second time (but this time actually intentionally), and in doing so, also saved his life. And then his parents were trying to kill each other in front of his eyes... I'm sure at one point in his life they were a happy family. Then throw the whole deal with the title of sword master and other politics into the mix... It's a messed up situation. I don't blame the man just wanting everyone in the Astrea family to just die.
