Haikyu S4 Episode 15

I think the reason they take HS sports more seriously is because HS in Japan is similar to Germany, in that HS is more like a vocational thing. It's not mandatory schooling for general education, but rather a specialized prep for college, so if I want to pursue volleyball, I pick a HS with a well-known volleyball team so I can then get a scholarship to a university with a popular volleyball team in the hopes I can do this professionally. If I pursue art, I go to an artsy HS and then an art college and so on.. so a lot of times, whether you get accepted in University there depends on the HS you went to, because they have a merits system (if most of the students test well, a college will agree to take a set number of students from that school) In my friends case, he dropped from middle school in his.. 3rd yr? (I think HS is only 3 years and middle is 3 years) so he couldn't get accepted to any HS, and therefore couldn't go to college vs my case where I also dropped out of middle school to homeschool, went to a delinquent HS and dropped that, but could still go to college because of my GED/HSE πŸ˜… so in Japan, HS is mini college, super competitive and determines your entire future basically unlike here where college is necessary but not taken seriously. That's also why studying abroad is so important to both Japanese and Korean students. Colleges and businesses take that into consideration when accepting applicants and there's a general bias towards students who studied abroad, which is such a classist thing. (You guys asked something about this topic in tangerine and this kinda ties in here as well so that's why I'm bringing it up here lol) I kinda talked in circles but I hope I helped your understanding of east Asian schooling a bit. Oh! And side note, in Japan, sports aren't usually taken as seriously as we see here, making it an even more competitive field to try and go to a good school and such. There's not many schools with specialized sports teams and it's harder to make a career out of sports. To the average Japanese, these are just mandated school clubs but not a super legitimate career path. It'd be similar to.. I dunno.. be part of the ghost hunting club and tell your guidance counselor you want to make a career in ghost hunting lol it's doable, but uncommon and difficult, costs a lot of money and special focus so the teachers are gonna tell you "well, ok but.. what law? Or science?" Just realized I contradicted myself a little bit so in the beginning when I said "they take it more seriously" I meant within sports, HS sports is taken more seriously, but teachers and school admins don't take it seriously lol

One of my favorite thing about the representation of High School Sports in Japan is that it goes all the way to the national level- and for a lot of major sports it’s even televised at that national level, as an enjoyer of tournament arcs, especially single elimination tournament arcs, it’s really easy to get invested!

The Anime Dude

18:03 they gave mattsun's block (from aoba johsai) spotlight when he first came up with it only, so anime watchers don't tend to notice as much but that blocking strategy was why they weren't using hinata much during that game. since mattsun and later kindaichi using the same strategy made him hit wherever he wanted hinata to hit they received almost all of his attacks, that's why hinata hated him most! not to mention he came up with it very early in the game. seijoh players are no joke w their intelligence fr 😭
