2025-08-11 15:35:18 +0000 UTCI feel like this show will be one of my favorites of all time. Iโm in my thirties starting a new family, but I hope to watch it again in 10 years, 20 years, 30 years even, God willing. I feel there will be a whole new perspective each time. Glad you guys watched and enjoyed it. I havenโt seen many interviews or behind the scene vids of it, but the one that I found really insightful and fun was this : https://youtu.be/pK76rYdl0aw?si=GKE4-HUFSgcfwes8 Hope you guys check it out whenever you sneak some free time for yourselves :D

2025-08-11 11:19:07 +0000 UTCReason for the reincarnation, I wonder if it's similar to Shinto, where if you die with regrets, grudges, or when it's too tragic, your spirit is believed to linger until their burdens are eased. The food is left out for them to gather the strength to move on and not haunt the living, and black is worn so the spirits can't recognize and stick to you. Koreans traditionally wore white before Christianity introduced the black dress-code, so I always wonder what the white was for, and if the reason for the white bows is a nod toward the traditional white clothing, but kept minimal so the spirits know you're there but can't cling to you. Just some thoughts I think about everytime funerals are covered in stories. I get the urge to distrust or be against shamanism. Korean dramas purposely paint them in a scummy light because Korea has gone the route of the west and heavily introduced Catholicism, which as a whole, seeks to besmurge traditional religions in order to easily convert new followers. Buddhism also has a history of sewing distrust, and there are a lot of scammers (just like you see with tarot or mediums in the west) who try to take advantage of the lost. But it's sad cuz it's a whole chunk of traditional culture being erased and there are people who believe and need these traditions to process grief. Shamanism isn't just belief and worship of spirits, but it's ancestor worship as well. To mock and deny this aspect of their culture, they are actively denying their history and ancestors. Japan has done a really good job at accepting new religious culture with the old and integrating old belief systems into modern life, so it's unfortunate that many other countries like Korea, America, England and so on struggle to do the same, and anything we do incorporate is considered "stupid superstition" like knocking on wood, for eg. A traditional celtic practice to ask the spirits of trees to intervene against negative spirits invading when you accidentally invite them in. (Like the saying, "speak of the devil, an you invite him in") Shamanic religions, just like any religion, can be abused but it's such a waste to see how modern culture discards it. (Had a really long argument with my father about religion and paganism today, so I'm still a bit amped up about it I guess ๐ point is, it's a stereotype in kdramas for shamans to be looney, nasty, or scammy usually unless it's a Joseon era drama. Even then, depending on the period it's based in, shamanism was actively outlawed and made criminal by Buddhist imperial families/courts. Anyone caught practicing it was severely punished or killed for heresy, and it was actively mocked so people wouldn't seek shamanistic help, but rather turn to the courts and temples, generating more government income that was spent on warfare or partying, leaving a lasting dent in the culture, and because it's closely related to witchcraft of the west, we foreigners pick up the bias easily)

2025-08-06 11:49:59 +0000 UTCAch, why'd I have to watch this on my counseling day? ๐ญ I'm such an emotional wreck lol This is why I have a hard time getting close to elders. You see their clock ticking and it's too hard. Seeing my mom getting old and beginning to fade away from overworking and taking care of everyone else like Gwan-sik has just been so hard to watch and I feel this show both makes me appreciate her efforts but also mourn the person she used to be and think about a future where she's not gonna be able to do the things I depend on her for. All my emotional and physical needs, what am I gonna even do when my mom needs the help? Ugh.. and my grandma, her mom.. ๐ฅบ who recommended this show? I need to have words for picking such a scary, bitter-sweet drama to watch.. such a wake up call to appreciate your loved ones while you can
