I work in broadcast engineering (which is synonymous with live production engineering) and it's awesome most of the time. You get to work on so many different problems, it's really great. Edit: Telestream Vantage is the kind of transcoding software in common use at streaming companies. I recommend FileFlows instead (it's free and uses ffmpeg).
