You have finally managed to challenge one on my "sacred cows" by diminishing the legitimacy of Terror Management Theory (TMT) / Ernest Becker "Denial of Death". The primary (and sub-concious) reason atheists are such an emotional threat is that we undermine the psychological defense religion provides. For atheists, a similar "existential ego threat" feeling can be had by accepting that free will is a myth. Ironically, the idea of free will is used to control the will of religious followers. [or maybe it's not ironic?]
