You can't kick out the assholes or suggest that being a "true" atheist ties you to all social justice movements. It's not a club. I can align with Sam Harris's opinion on free will and religion while completely disagreeing with him on gun control and Charles Murray. I can think cancel culture and identity politics is getting out of hand, while also finding racism and bigotry abhorrent. I can think Eli's diatribes have been awesome these past weeks, while disagreeing with this one. Am I still in the no god club?

2021-06-24 17:50:12 +0000 UTCAt the end of the day, I agree with Eynah's most recent Polite Conversations episode, though I would suggest anyone listening start at the ten minute mark when she actually gets to the substance of her criticism. I get the instinct to push back against Salon, but we do no ourselves favors by acting like they don't have a point.

2021-06-24 16:31:31 +0000 UTCI get the point of the diatribe, and Eli's point about referencing "new atheists" being confusing. That was something that I hadn't considered, and it's important to clarify. However, I think it is just as much complaining about an imperfect headline as Eli bemoaned complaining about an imperfect movement. There's a real problem with prominent "New Atheism" folks (whether they were prominent in '04 or more recently) that have teamed up (or "merged") with far right assholes. Hell, Eli even mentioned one such example in the Southern Baptist story.
