What Is It?
This is an op-ed from M. Gallery, in which he takes readers back to the distant past of the 1980s. They tell their tale of growing up in central California, and their first experiences with anime. They discuss how these moments led to a lifetime of fandom, and how it helped them to connect with their mother, whose passion for all things nerdy endured even in her final days.
How Did Patreon Power It?
This is a case where our Patrons basically powered, well... everything! The idea was brought up in the Anime Herald Discord by Patron and contributor Ashley Hakker.
At the time, I was trying to determine what types of content we should fund and I figured I'd ask the room, to see what our Patrons would like to see.
"Personal bias, but I love anything about fandom culture," she posted, "Could be a chance to start asking for 'origin stories' of fans?"
The idea was an instant hit across the room... and I'll admit that I liked the idea, as well. Our shared culture as fans is something that we should be actively preserving, so helping to make this a reality is ideal.
I put out a call for origin stories on the web, and received several responses. M.'s initial pitch was more than enough for me to give the go-ahead to fund the full article.
