The Editor's Desk, 3/7/2022: She Is The One Called Sailor Moon

Happy Monday everyone,

I hope your week is starting off well! I'm pleased to announce that, starting today, we'll be starting a regular patrons-only feature for you all.

To cut to the chase, every couple of weeks, I'll be taking some time to chat with everyone; to talk about the comings and goings at Anime Herald, about events in the anime world, or whatever our amazing community members are working on. Ideally, these will be generally breezy, fun reads to make your day a little brighter.

And what better way to kick things off than by celebrating the 30th anniversary of Sailor Moon? The first episode of Toei’s Sailor Moon anime debuted on this day, at 7:00PM JST. The series’ premiere, “The Crybaby: Usagi's Beautiful Transformation”, introduced the world to an all-new type of heroine.

Folks didn’t realize it at the time, but Usagi (or Serena, for you Cloverway fans) would go on to revolutionize the anime world. Since the series’ debut, Sailor Moon has been dubbed into dozens of languages, and enjoyed by millions of viewers across the globe. It's a cultural touchstone that's been adored, imitated, and shared by countless aficionados, young and old.

Whether it’s a send-up in Excel Saga, an homage by pop star Dua Lipa, or a cafe based on the franchise in Texas, it’s clear that Sailor Moon’s influence extends far and wide. We can only hope that Usagi’s star will continue to shine as brightly in ten, twenty, even thirty years from today.

• Coop and co-host MadDiLAny went live with a new episode of podcast "Dude, You Remember Macross?" This episode saw the two chatting up the not-quite-as-infamous Wings of Rean with Russell Latshaw.
• Skeith continues her "Make A Musou" series, which adapts popular media properties to the Musou gaming genre. This time around, she tackled Pokemon, breaking down a staggering eighteen hypothetical characters across more than 20,000 words. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: she is a machine.
• Chiaki continues to lend their talents to tabletop RPG Hard Wired Island. The team behind the game launched a new Kickstarter to fund a series of scenarios and campaigns for the cyberpunk flavored RPG. In particular, Chiaki wrote Tinderbox, which places players in the roles of a bunch of corporate OLs who stumble on a corporate conspiracy.
• Allie Capps launched a new podcast, in which they and a handful of friends watch through the entirety of the original Sailor Moon anime. The first episode sees the crew (dubbed "The Grill Scouts") watching the first seven episodes.
• Ethan Fox's Tanooki-sama Studios successfully crowdfunded a new key visual for their courtroom RPG, Nina Aquila: Legal Eagle, Season One. The team has been sharing previews of the art. Since they've surpassed their goal, Tanooki-sama will donate additional funds to the British Red Cross's Ukraine Relief Efforts.
