The Editor's Desk: 2/16/2023

Happy Thursday, everybody!

The past few weeks have been busy, for sure. Most important, though, is that the Anime Herald team got a bit bigger this week! On Monday, we welcomed Cy as a new member of our editing team. We're all super excited to have them aboard as we continue our journey to explore the anime landscape. We have a number of fantastic pieces in the pipeline, which we can't wait to share with you, and we're currently running through a number of pitches that have us genuinely excited.

Outside of Anime Herald, I've been spending much and more time on the book project; notably, I've been eagerly combing through old magazines, interviews, and news articles, to build a vibrant picture of the earliest days of anime fandom. From contemporaneous chronicles about Space Fanzine Yamato to 1985 interviews with Carl Macek, it's been a wild ride through the annals of history. The finish line is still a ways off, but every night, a few more steps are made, and everything gets a few meters closer to the goal.

This is, without a doubt, the biggest project I’ve undertaken to date, but it’s one that I am incredibly eager to share with you all.

Rod? Check. Reel? Check. Controller? Check-a-rooney! Earlier this month, Skeith published a new article, which dives the shockingly vast world of fishing minigames. She tackled more than fifty titles that have made angling action a part of their gameplay ethos, from Zelda: Link's Awakening, to Yakuza, and beyond. Seriously, if you can think of a game with fishing in it, she's probably covered it.

In the streaming realm, Chiaki recently made her debut as a VTuber on February 4. She's been playing a bunch of comfy games, from Against the Storm to Final Fantasy XIV, as she chats it up with her audience.

Likewise, Ozaline has also debuted as a streamer this month, starting with Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time. Her next stream is slated for tomorrow at 7PM Eastern, so definitely be sure to pop in and say "hi!"

Didn't we do this yesterday? Borealis Capps has been watching Groundhog Day (the movie) every single day since Groundhog Day (the holiday). In a series of daily podcast episodes, they've given thoughtful analyses of the film, and used it as a springboard on several genuinely fascinating discussions. In one episode, they'll work the film into a discussion on small-town life. In another, they'll use it to springboard into a dramatic reading of Chekhov. It's been a fascinating ride so far, that's worth a listen.
