The Editor's Desk Newsletter, 7/5/2023

Hi everyone, and Happy Wednesday. We're officially in the dog days of summer at this point, as temperatures continue to rise, and we get further into July. 

But, more important than that, we just finished up with Anime Expo! It was a big weekend, with literally dozens of new manga, anime, light novels, and other projects revealed to tease the imaginations of fans across the country. From a new trailer for Delicious in Dungeon, to Spy x Family crossovers with  Street Figher 6, it felt like there was something for just about everybody shown off in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Personally, I can't wait to see what comes of the new Panty and Stocking series; the original was a transgressive, often subversive comedy with a sharp sense of humor and a willingness to just shitpost in the most clever ways. I'm curious to see what Hiroyuki Imaishi and the team at Twitter can do all these years later.

Site Updates

In site news, I'm proud to announce that our funding drive for June was a big success! With our 25% donation, plus a dollar-for-dollar match from my end, we were able to donate more than $180 to The Trevor Project, to help LGBTQIA+ youths. The charity helps to save queer lives every single day, and I'm grateful to all of you - and to everyone else who helped us to donate what we did this year.

Content Updates

Over the next few weeks, we're going to have an increased output; Seth Burn was on-site at Anime Expo, and he's talked with folks from across the industry. We'll be working to interleave his convention coverage with our regular content, so that we can keep things rolling for everybody.

Beyond that, on July 29 and 30, I'll be on-site at RI Anime Con, as it's an inaugural convention in my backyard. I'll be sure to get my usual "from the trenches" coverage from the biggest anime con in the smallest state in the union. (As for why we're not doing Otakon this year: I wanted to sleep in my own bed this time. 😅)

Skeith at The Story Arc Blog has been talking about all things Spider-Man recently, with a pair of articles on the web-slinger. The first is a piece imploring Marvel to do something with Peni Parker, who pilots the SP//dr mech. The second is a short post celebrating Sakura Spider's return in the new Spider-Man: Octopus Girl manga.

LettuceKitteh has been hard at work on the Uminetta fansub team, producing subs for the Umineko: Stage of the Golden Witch stage show. They just celebrated the release of the title, which is available on itch.io.

Lauren Orsini is calling all fans to answer a single question for a project she's working on: What's your favorite anime hot springs episode? She's taking all answers via Google Forms.

Allie Capps, AKA LiteralGrill, has done the impossible once again by watching every available animated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. However, when doing her research, she discovered that there were two adaptations that are now lost media. In a new essay, she offers a short look at both of these missing masterpieces.

On the Bomb Squad Movie Night's latest episode, Sundown McMoon and the crew dive into The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun - a 1968 film from the late, great Isao Takahata, exploring this lush work with a troubled production that, nonetheless, had an indelible impact on the anime world going forward.
