Question about Long Patreon Videos

Hello all,

YouTube is great but at times I feel that they are too stupid to comprehend what I'm trying to do artistically.

So I have really liked uploading long form videos as Patreon exclusives, since I feel I can express myself without it being sullied by the idiocy of others.

My question is, from a purely technical perspective, I have seen people complain on the Discord about Patreon's video player.

For these longer videos, does Patreon work well enough? Or should I look into a different delivery format, like uploading Patreon exclusives as unlisted YouTube videos and sharing the link here?

Or, if anyone else has any ideas, I'm open to that. Let me know.

Rumble might be an option too- and they don’t censor like the tube.

I disagree with the people here who are saying moving to unlisted youtube videos is a bad thing. I think doing unlisted youtube vids is almost universally better. I don't want exclusivity, I just want content, and I want to support you making that content.

Ethan

I'm totally fine with long form patreon videos. (1st world problem)The only problem I have is I sometimes can't play the the patreon videos, in the car while I have my maps open and connected to my car. Unlike YouTube we're I have no problems. I personally rather have long form on patreon without having to access YouTube feels a little bit more exclusive. All that to say Patreon is fine for long form. It might be easier on you technical wise if you uploaded everything to YouTube and the long forms as private exclusive just for patreon. Whatever decisions you make is cool with me.

Just keep it on Patreon. Juggling too many different platforms is a nightmare

Erin

I love your long form content!

Jonathan

To build off of the YouTube point. Using the “little jimmy” video for example. Even if it was unlisted, or even private. The transcript would still pick up words like “sho*t” & “ki*l” and could demonetize the video or channel based on how many prior violations you face(d)

Patreon player works well.

Amber O'Hanley

no issues

and its lame having to scroll farther and farther down on patreon as you watch everything, but not a big deal

the patreon video player is *fine* but not ideal, the only real thing i dont care for is that the video stops playing if you scroll past it, but thats not a huge issue. overall i think its important for you to separate the youtube and patreon content as it feels better that you maintain a type of video format on youtube as ive always seen that as a chronological and canon place for your stuff. the youtube feels like a story or saga that im apart of, and the patreon is like having your snapchat story or something. if you really wanted to appeal to the idea of having the videos on a separate platform i suggest you continue doing what youre doing but with the addition of archiving videos on a platform like google drive, so for these real long ones ppl could listen to them offline and with the media player of their choice. great pic dan, a reliable and intelligent young man

It works just fine for me! I like the long videos on patreon.

starry

First off Hi Dan you look great. I’ve never had problems with Patreon videos & love the long form sm

Christin Cease

Uploading to patreon is nice for keeping the video totally private to patrons only, but Youtube is convenient because its easier to come back to, it gets added to your watch history, and its more archived (if patreon ever has some sort of issue). P.S., I really like that tie.

Ethan Roberts

I haven’t had any problems with patreon’s player. Uploading the videos unlisted to YouTube could end up being a problem because other people can leak them easier via adding it to a YouTube playlist for anyone to see.

Beeple

Patreon’s video and audio player are kinda finicky sometimes; usually refreshing the page resolves any bugs for me, so I personally don’t mind, but from an accessibility/usability standpoint, maybe unlisted on YouTube would be good? I think if you do that, maybe you could still upload a screenshot/thumbnail to Patreon alongside the link, so non-patrons would see the preview and be incentivized to subscribe—lest they miss out on the artistic ground you’re breaking. Wow, you sure are dressed to kill—look out, Addie!!

looseseal

I’ve personally never had problems with Patreon video player (I only do it on Firefox) but many podcasts I listen to do unlisted YouTube videos which works fine for them too

Temi

It works fine for me.

Jessica Wessica

Patreon player works fine for me. I have another Patreon membership that uploads videos as a private YouTube link and I’ve heard that those links get shared around and as a result aren’t totally paywall barred.

Adam

I haven’t had any issues with Patreon - both the long form videos and podcasts have been working just fine for me. If multiple people specifically are having issues, though, I’d be alright with unlisted YouTube video links!

madi

Patreons video player works great. Bring on the long form videos!

FNA

Patreon works great for me but one reason I would advocate for an unlisted YouTube link is it really helps me to process the content of the video if there is a transcript. Maybe just my audhd ass but it means I can go back and reread if I don’t process something you said instead of having to restart parts of the video over and over. I might be the only one who experiences this though

Sasha Chimaera Suraski

I think the video player is fine on Patreon, the audio player is what’s unusable

Jackie

Looking sharp, Dan! Long-form videos work fine for me here on Patreon. No tech issues.

Henry Kenney III

the patreon video player works fine for me

kieks

Patreon always works fine for me and whenever I see the videos longer than 20 minutes it makes my day
