As a baby, Ella (Anne Hathaway) receives a visit from Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox), her fairy godmother, and is bestowed with a magical talent that requires her to obey anything that she is told to do. This proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, particularly once her mother dies and she is forced to live with the cruel Dame Olga (Joanna Lumley). Eventually, Ella embarks on a journey to find Lucinda and break the spell, accompanied by the handsome Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy).

From what I hear the book the film is based on is worlds different and people love it more. I do like the twist on the cliche of instead of coming from a family where you should be a doctor or a lawyer instead it's singing and dancing and Slannen wants to be a lawyer instead. There is actually a deleted extended ending that helps bring more things to a close with Lucinda ahowing up and offering Ella a gift which she politely declines through gritted teeth and the older stepsister asks for a prince from her which she gives in fhe form of a frog, she insults Lucinda and so turns her into a frog as well which explains why the godmother is suddenly there and where the other stepsister went. Also you see Ella's father annouce he wants a divorce from his wife so Slannen steps over and gives a businesscard as a lawyer.
