Invasion Points: Previewing future expansions?

By Rachelle Riddle

When Blizzard announced we were going to Argus, I couldn't help but wonder what's next. Normally new planets and gathering systems are reserved for new expansions. In confronting the Burning Legion head-on, we're nearing the end of the Titan storyline, which opens up new stories. Obviously N'zoth is a threat we haven't dealt with, and Queen Azshara is out there too. Kul Tiras is also a mystery. All three of these could be the subject of the next expansion. But what's beyond that?

There may just be a hint in the Invasion Points. When I was doing the individual invasions, I wondered what their purpose was. The zones are beautiful and surely there has to be more to them than a small scenario. Perhaps it's just an exercise in creativity, allowing the artists to explore different zone themes without committing to a full world, kind of like how Overwatch's Doomfist was born because they came up with cool-sounding villain names. Or, perhaps the Invasion Point zones are previews of where we're going next. Much like the assault on Icecrown Citadel didn't completely remove the Scourge, perhaps our expedition on Argus won't fully deal with the Burning Legion and we have to hunt them down.

The Vindicaar offers us the possibility to traverse space, which opens up literal worlds of options. It's not unusual for WoW to hint at future expansions with current events. Maybe each Invasion Point is the site of a new expansion. Maybe they're all a single expansion and we travel between planets much like we travel to the different points on Argus's surface. Or maybe they're just pretty places.
