Legion’s fast-paced patch cycle and the grind that never ends

By Rachelle Riddle

Legion has been unprecedented in the amount of content put out, a direct response to the negative experience in the previous expansion. Warlords of Draenor suffered from lack of end-game content, which led to loads of alts to fill the time, as well as stagnation once the last patch content drought kicked in. To fix the problem of Warlords, Blizzard swung the opposite way on the pendulum to deliver a more enjoyable playing experience. However, when Blizzard swings the opposite way, it doesn't always work for the better. Sometimes we just need things in moderation.

Blizzard's mantra for Legion is that they always want something for you to do. No matter what you're doing, you're progressing your character in some way. There is a singular focus on your main, you are always working, always "on." Perhaps this was exacerbated by the RNG and Artifact Power grind that has been present in the expansion. Constant patch content ensures that you can never relax. Right when you get close to finishing something, something else comes out which starts the grind again.

The Netherlight Crucible had good intentions, but it started up the Artifact Power grind again that so many players loathe and we have a new threshold of 75 traits per spec before we can consider ourselves set. Tomb of Sargeras is a great raid, but it was heavily overshadowed by Argus going on the PTR a mere week after it released. Paragon reps made it so you're never done with them. The Argus dailies reset multiple times a day, as do Order Hall missions. Just when you get to the mid-point during a raid cycle where you feel you can relax again, a new zone comes out with brand new requirements. Broken Shore did it to Nighthold, Argus did it to Tomb of Sargeras. We're expecting an expansion announcement at BlizzCon, which likely leaves us with a year of Antorus...again. Had these patches been more spread out, perhaps they would feel more natural and less overbearing.

I feel like Mists of Pandaria had the perfect mix between dailies and raiding. Dailies were truly once a day and you could do them at any time of the day and stop once you got to exalted with the factions. Timeless Isle was a perfect version of a new zone — we could go exploring at will, do a smattering of dailies, and play an alt or two. Legion, on the other hand, has felt like content has been thrown at us and any leisure time is accidental.

Several nights a week, I raid for a few hours and then do world quests for another few hours. I don't even do Broken Isles world quests anymore, just Argus and emissaries.  This is what Blizzard wants, always progressing your character. Sometimes I like to do things like transmogs, old raids, or alts, but I never have time because because I'm either progressing in raid or progressing outside of it. "Always progressing" means you're never done. I miss when raid progression happened inside the raid and the open world was more leisurely. Yes, Warlords was egregious in its lack of content and content drought. But we just needed a small stream to quench our thirst, not a tsunami.

Well yeah, it’s a years worth of content.

Wouldn't it be nice if at a later date we could (cheerfully) spend an extravagant amount to purchase mounts that we could never get to drop from factions of which we are exalted? Say... once we defeated the final boss of the final raid - even in LFR?

I would like to say, that as a single-character player, I am largely very satisfied with the current content, variety, and difficulty. The only criticism I have is that I can't get the paragon rep mounts with any degree of certainty, when there are some that I REALLY want. Other than that I am pleased by where the game is at this moment.

Dawnbright.

I just returned after 1 1/2 years away, and in my experience of the past weeks, Legion has done a great job of making a seasoned player feel like a complete idiot. I feel like I can never catch up unless I devote hours upon hours every day, time I just don't have to spend on a game any more. At the rate I'm going, I'll get flying in the Broken Isles (just level I of pathfinder) just before the next expansion hits. I don't know anything about artifact levels, prestige, oh and the next artifact traits that I still haven't unlocked despite being revered with the faction on the Broken Shore... It's all a big muddle to me.

I know a lot of people keep saying this is an alt friendly patch, but I am really frustrated by it, as my alts are my main money makers. Beginning with Cataclysm, I was able to make a lot of money with crafting, but not this time. Now we are back to Lich King and BC with the crafting being a grind up as well as leveling, plus gated with reputation grinds. That said, with the insignias, I can do the rep stuff pretty easy. However, it's pretty embarrassing to take toons like my mage or hunter into dungeons, because I can barely play them. And yet, I have alchemy on both because of the transmutes. For example, I used the WoD free character boost to get my hunter up to 90, then the Legion free boost to get her to 100, but I really don't like hunters that much. Then, I've been spending many more hours each week on alts to get them all up to speed to be maintenance free money makers, like the last 3 expansions. That is just not happening this time, and I am rethinking my alt army. I had better grind up some more plate wearing alts for future, I guess so I can have fun while grinding? I'm forcing myself to dial down the emissary questing so I can spend time doing the actual content and other fun stuff on my main, which is what I like. I thought both MoP and WoD had better mix. I've recently realized that we are in the back half of the expansion, but I'm not working on PvP or soloing old dungeons or anything fun :(. The emissary stuff drives me batty, because the rewards don't equal the time commitment or difficulty of individual world quests. I have managed to snag only one of the Paragon level items (the Val'sharah mount), and if I could get the rest, I would quit them. The time spent per money/stuff earned was better in the last two expansions, imo. I think it was a mistake to not allow passive earning of the Order Hall Resources. It didn't have to be as generous as garrisons, but it's the start to grinding everything else. Also, we have three gated content areas: Suramar, Broken Shore, and Argus. Maybe it was too much? I wasn't going to bother with getting alts into Argus, but I see they have buffed the money class hall missions, so maybe I will start that next week with the Faire coming around. I saw a comment on the forums from someone who has thousands of Order Hall Resources because he skipped doing emissary and order hall missions and is just raiding and pvping. Maybe he's happier and richer? I don't know. I love the lore of this expansion, and the scenery is amazing, but I'm not enjoying myself as much as I hoped to.

I remember Mists of Pandaria being lambasted for the dailies at the start of the expansion. There were a lot of goodies locked behind the reputations and people felt like they fell behind if they didn’t play every day. The best pace change, in my opinion, was when they allowed you to complete your “seven dungeons for the week” in one day. This allowed me to finish up my progression for the week as fast or as slow as I wanted. It also allowed for some non-progression mount farming/alts/etc if you wanted. I think the weekly cap on gear progression should come back.

Josh

Amen to Mists nailing the dailies system down. Locking stuff behind rep, not so much. But yaa
