pre-Christian European religions also had similar house gods/spirits, e.g. the Lares of Roman belief, minor gods or spirits of ancestors (kinda like Shamanism) or the surviving concept of Nisse/Tomte/Wichtel in northern continental Europe, basically 'house kobolds' that either help or play tricks on you, depending on how you treat them.
